Rear subframe/trailing arm assy

I'm gonna be removing & possibly replacing my rear subframe assy soon, the original appears to be slightly bent or maybe out of adjustment.

 

Do I need to follow any specific proceedure ??

 

Or is it just the usual case of removing the wheels, hubs, calipers, bottom shocker bolts, anti roll bar, exhaust, etc ??

Well I've never tried this myself, but had a conversation about it at AMD. From what I gathered it can be a bit of a swine to get off (pivot bolts I think are the worst bit), and I guess you would need to get the full geo done when its back on there. Is it worth having it optically checked first to see what's what?

Now the car is lowered, the misalignment of the back subframe is fairly easy to see. It appears that the subframe has been mounted approx 5mm too far to the n/s. Not really noticable at the standard height. I spoke to a friend who owns a body repair whorkshop close to where I live and he says that there is a small amount of sideways adjustment that can be done.

The n/s/r wing has been repainted at some time in the past and I'm assuming that either they have just remounted the subframe in the wrong position or it may have been slightly bent.

Has the subframe ever had new axle bushes fitted in the past? They need to be fitted at precisely the right angle and pressed into the axle a precise distance, otherwise you'll get an uneven bias to one side.

I think that will be the "adjustment" that my friend with the body repair workshop was talking about.

 

I bought the car in April this year (full VWSH). The car has had it's n/s/r wing resprayed at sometime in the past. The respray is a very good paint job - the only thing that gives it away is that the side moulding was masked rather than removed when the paint was applied. I'm not aware of any history of the rear subframe, hopefully I'll just need some new bushes... :D

 

I think the best "plan of action" will be to remove the rear subframe and inspect it to see exactly what the problem is.

 

I'll just have to use one of my other cars to get to work while it's off the road... :(

Best bet is to fit new bushes but then if the axle isn't right to begin with, you'll have invalid reference points for the new ones. You'll need to consult the official VW workshop manual for the precise parameters.

 

If you think your axle is bent, I suppose you could nab a rear axle off a Passat and start over?

 

Might just be that your current bushes are so knackered, they've collapsed into a different position? Bit of a long shot I know.
