Hi all, please help ?

I have a mk 2 golf gti 1.8 16v it was ok yesterday. Then on the way home from work it started to run very lumpy. i.e. 3 cylinders.(i think )

I changed the plugs but still the same. Any suggestions would be great as this is my first gti and i dont have a clue..

I dont know how old they are.

Do you think a should change them before anything else ?

See if anyone you know near you has a set on their 16v engine so you can try first, before you go out buying a set, just to see if they're the cause.

I'm not too sure about that to be honest, will have to wait and see if someone else can confirm this.

Have you taken off the distributor atall?

Maybe your timing belt has skipped a few teeth maybe.

Just see if the leads are the prob though first.

The guy i bought the car from changed the plugs & dizzy cap in november.

Why he never done the leads is beyond me !

My neighbour is having a look in the morning.

I will keep you posted.

Thank's again for the help..

9/10 faults (nearly!) are HT related, run the car up in the dark and open the bonnet and look in, see if you can see any sparks anywhere...its a good start

Hi there. The car is running terrible at the moment..no power ! When the car is ticking over is sounds like it has only got 3 cylinders. It takes a life time just to get to 60 mph.

While it's running, disconnect one plug lead at a time. You should be able to tell if any of the cylinders aren't firing if removing a lead has no effect on the way it's running. If that test shows a non-firing cylinder (or two) it'll likely be either a lead or the distributor cap at fault.

If all cylinders are firing then maybe the crankshaft pulley key has sheared and screwed up the cam timing. Check the timing marks all line up for a start.

No luck yet ! Got new dizzy cap and plugs. Guess what (still the same).

Could it be possible that it is getting starved of fuel ?

If my injectors where blocked would the car still run ?

Depends on the value of the car really.

To get a head fixed can cost around 300-400, it is possible to do yourself but it's probably a pain to do.
