1.8 16v. air lock in cooling system.

Recommended Posts

The old gal started to chuck all her coolant out so i have just done the head gasket, ( had the head crack tested, all OK.) i have also replaced the thermostat. I refilled the cooling system and started the engine, temp rose to 90 plus, the heater was still cold and the thermotat had not opened as the bottom hose was still cold,i think that i have air locks how do i get the air out of the cooling system.

(the water pump is working it was replaced last year.)

JRado, Welcome to the forum...

Have you tried filling up using the top hose and waiting for water to appear in the expansion tank? - if not flush all pipes and check for blockages then refill...

Also if you still have a black cap change it for a new blue one as the pressure relief valve sometimes sticks.

What mix of G12+ are you using?? about 30-40% with water seems to be best for the UK

Don't rule out a faulty new stat (especially if it's not a VW one) - test it in a pan of water...

Just removed the valve out of the heater pipe. put in boiling water, should the valve have opened?

could this be why im getting air locks?

i binned the valves to the matrix on mine and put in 2 copper pipes, changed expansion tank and cap plus had a few new hoses,

think we have cracked it, removed the valve in the heater pipe and fitted plain tube, got circulation but still ran very hot, bypassed the cooling fan switch cos the fan did not cut in till temp was over 110.

have used a relay with ignition feed to switch on so it is running all the time that the engine is running. so i will be replacing the rad switch a.s.a.p.

hmmm .. just took it out for a spin and its still not right.

After a trip up the dual carriage way the water temp guage was showing around 100-110 degrees .. i then had the oil lamp flashing and beeping at me. After opening the bonnet and having a look noticed that the water going into the radiator at the top is very hot (at engine temp) but the water coming out at the bottom is stone cold ... im pretty sure its not supposed to be like that, shouldnt it be luke warm atleast??

Going to test the thermostat .. will test the old one removed before and then the new one which is fitted. Going to test both as it seems to be the same fault as we had with the old one in before having the head checked and gasket changed.

Im hoping that the old one is knackered and we were just unlucky and the new one is also a dud...

any other ideas just in case?

Thanks alot,

Jason

have no idea ... water seems to be running round fine ... just that the car has decided it wants to run at over 100 degrees ??? and i cant get away with just driving it anyway as its bringing on all of the temperature alarms ..

im pretty sure they are fine .. its definately getting too hot. I pulled my stereo out earlier after driving and it was roasting hot, burnt my hand touching it. with it being so hot its thinning out the oil which is what brings on the warning light.

could pull out the run on sensor and tape the wire to the rocker cover when driving will leave the fan permantly on, just remeber to take the wire off the rocker cover when you finished driving or your battery will end up going flat

we already have the fan wired to run all the time while the ignition is on.

There is the hot water coming in the top hose to the radiator and when in the bottom hose the water is cold, so that is definately doing its job ...

we have changed that. we tested it in boiling water to make sure it works .. and it does.

had exactly the same prob when i fitted my 2l,take off top rad hose and fill rad up first, squeezin all hoses, then run engine whilst revin up and down with cap off until i starts to boil over then turn off and re fill.

This should work,i had lock in rad and heater matrix and it was a right pain ,i also ditched by pass valves but run car up with 1 pipe off to bleed the matrix

Hope this helps

I know it's a while since you posted this, so you've probably sussed it by now but I recently just had the same problem myself. It might sound really simple but check the rubber seal on the expansion tank cap. I spent three nights trying to get to the bottom of what I thought was an air lock, but it turned out to be that the system wasn't sealed properly, so the water kept backing up and gushing out passed the o-ring which had slipped out of its recess.
