herisites 0 Posted June 12, 2006 Hi everyone, as some most probly know i am looking to get a corrado vr6 soon. However i am stuck with what to do in regards to mileage. Most vr's for sale are over 100k miles but have full vw service history, had parts replaced including all the timing belts etc. On the other hand there are some lower miled vr's for sale with 70k miles which may still have fsh but have not yet had belts changed etc. I am stuck on which would be best to go for as the lower mileage ones are obviously low mileage and therefore good but would need the belts etc changing after a few k miles, where as a higher mileage one may have a lot of miles but has already had the belts etc changed so i would not need to get them done. As you all have corrados and know them what would be the best choice? Thanks. Rob H.
Nick 0 Posted June 12, 2006 The best package for you. You may get problems with which ever one you go for. Corrado engines go on for miles, there are people on here with 150+ im sure.
herisites 0 Posted June 12, 2006 Well obviously i would like to spend as little as possible so basically i wanna know whether a vr with higher miles which has had fsh and belts changed etc would have any problems? Because if it will most likely have problems and a lower miled one wont and therefore would only cost me to change the belt then wouldnt that be the better deal? Nick 0 Posted June 12, 2006 Havent you just answered you own question...?! :D No-one on here can predict what will happen to either car. With your brief description, sounds like a low mileage example might be better. But does that one have history? Whats the bodywork and interior like on both? Do you know how much it will cost do chains/belts etc?
Nick 0 Posted June 12, 2006 Well obviously i would like to spend as little as possible... Be careful with that. You get what you pay for. :?
herisites 0 Posted June 12, 2006 Yeah i know, i am willing to spend money as i would like to get it mint. Do you know how much chains/belts are to get done? Im guessing quite a bit being an older vw. Condition wise they are great and are both enthusiasts cars so well looked after so therefore im guessin the engines should be good too. I think a low mileage one would be best as it will have less miles giving me more to play with and will be worth more if i sell it (not that i would want to lol). vr6storm 0 Posted June 12, 2006 first thing first.............VR6's don't have timing belts.............they have chains and according to VW these "should" last the service life of the car.........tho some ppl and specialists here reckon its worthwhile changing them when they're over the 100k mark.............. as for which ones are best to go for..........ones that have evidence of regular oil/filter changes, and have obviously been well loved,if possible get the owner to start from cold and see how they drive it from cold it'll answer any concerns you have about whether its been well looked after or not..........i would never buy from someone who with a cold engine heads near the redline
G60Jet 1 Posted June 12, 2006 Lower miles and peace of mind that the work has been done. i.e DIY or someone you trust 30k is 2-3 years driving on these cars.
herisites 0 Posted June 12, 2006 Thanks, i was not aware that the chains are only advised to be changed. I think thats sorted it, i will go for the lower miled one :) and thanks for the advice on checking it cold, i will look out for that, i will also print off the buyers guide from the knowledge base. Thanks again and for your help Shaggsy!
Stan 24v 0 Posted June 12, 2006 Just a bit more for you, its not the chains that need changing, its the guides that they sit on, as they are a bit weak. They tend to get replaced with mk4 guides these days, whcih are made better and stronger. Youre looking around £300-£400 iirc. Unless, youre handy with a spanner ;)
herisites 0 Posted June 12, 2006 How handy do you need to be as i am pretty handy i.e. i would usually change bushes, brakes, suspension etc myself but i dont wanna mess around with parts that are too hard.
StuartFZR400 0 Posted June 12, 2006 Id prefer a low mileage car but expect to knock off a few quid for an expected service bill within your early ownership. But as people are saying it all depends - a newer C migh have been kept outdoors versus a slightly older one thats been garaged and teh rubbers etc have not shrunk as much etc etc etc - you get the idea.
