ABS Light

Recommended Posts

Hey,

Just had the rear disks and pads and bearings done on my C and now the ABS light wont go off. I am going to take it back to the garage tomorrow but I was wondering if there is anything I could do myself.

The light comes on and goes off as normal when I start the engine up but soon as I go above 5 mph it clicks back on again. It wont come on when I reverse from the off (this I sometimes do due to my drive but I aint prepared to drive to work backwards) I am fairly certain the ABS works as I got it up to 60 and slammed all on and ground to a halt without any skidding. And both front and back brakes are working as they are hot to the touch after driving.

Its a pisser!!!

Any help would be great cheers!!!!!

Looks like they have damaged a abs sensor whilst taking the discs off. When ur abs light comes on your abs wont work.Test in wet conditions and u can feel if the abs is working as the brakes pulse off an on.Let the garage deal with the problem it looks like they caused.

There is a ring that slides onto the back of the disc, that the sensor senses (this is a little vauge, I can see it in my head but cant put it into words!)

You have to take it off of the old disc and put in onto the new one. You will be able to see if they have done it.

I will try to take a pic - my rear beam is lying on the ground under my car!

Yeah, commonly done that, on the rear discs. The rotor gets left on the old disc. You can lever them off with a screwdriver. Was it a VW specialist? Best get back there quick before the discs go in the bin.

wNo its a local garage. He has owned a G60 and Vr6 so thats why I went to him. Will give him a buz. If worse comes to worse are these parts available anywhere or is it a breakers job?

Thanks again

Just rung him and he said he had got the disks. He didnt change them over so all looks good at the mo to get em back. Should I drive the car before it gets sorted?

Make sure that the rotors are a good fit onto the back of the new disks. If they've been opened up by rust on the old disk they'll spin freely on the back of the new disks or get jammed and not spin at all causing the ABS light to come on intermittently... It's $£%@ing annoying when it does it too! They're not expensive IIRC and they're a doddle to fit once you've got the rear disks off...

The car should be OK to drive, just be VERY careful as the ABS won't be working if the light is on and the roads are getting slippy with winter fast approaching... You really don't want to have to find out how strong a 'rado is by hitting something... :?
