craigowl 0 Posted July 11, 2006 This is is a post that should follow JIM's wtf paintwork problem. Summer rain in this country can contain many substances as fallout. e.g, Saharan dust, pollen, insects, frogs, fish and even walnuts. Aggressive or toxic chemicals in solution are commonly found, too, though not as much as before the Clean Air Act of 1956 when many of us living in British industrial cities were breathing in droplets of sulphuric acid during foggy weather! Thousands of extra deaths occurred in the great London smogs of the early 50s, forcing the government to take action. In the spring of 1986 we had radioactive iodine and other harmful fallout from Chernobyl washed out with the rainfall, several days after the disaster. The experts had told us just after the explosion that the upper winds were such that the fallout would not reach the UK, by the way. The plume of dust came round in a circle and was washed out over Norway (I think) and the UK! Experts still get high measurements of radioactivity in the hillside vegetation of southwest Scotland, even now. Shockingly, in 2006, any lambs raised in one or two districts there, are still not allowed to be put on the market for consumption. We hear about this last topic from time to time in the Scottish news, but I suspect the powers that be would not like the bulk of the UK population to know exactly what is in our water and air. Using plenty of wax at least twice a year should help to protect your paintwork. VW (Mars?) Red was a doomed formula, though, I suspect.
