My Rado is sick.

Recommended Posts

Hi all

After owning my rado for nearly a year I have replaced quite a few things, shocks, springs, fuel pump, MAF, ISV, water pump, thermostat housing, fan relay, pads, plus a few more things I can't think of.

At the weekend my VR6 decided to cut out on me (dead battery). So i put a multimeter on the battery and it is only showing between 11-12v when the engine is running, which i assume means the alternator has gone. Also the starter motor wont engage till the 3rd or 4th time (new one needed), the ABS light has just appeared (think its a sensor), my tax runs out at the end of the month along with the MOT and it needs a service. :( :( :(

Just thought I would like to share my problems with you lot. Also whats a ballpark figure on how much this will cost. If its gonna cost over a grand I am thinking of cutting my losses and selling up.

Rant over.

I shouldnt think it'll cost a grand for an alternator, starter motor, and sensor!!

Can you not service the car yourself? Fuel filter, plugs, oil filter, and some new oil wont break the bank?

I cant help you with the tax!

Although if you say MOT is due at the end of the month, why dont you take it there and get them to sort the problems whilst theyre MOTing it.

Nick

don't sell it, you'll only want another one. Bite the bullet and service it yourself. There's nothing in your list of problems that is too expensive. Mine is sick too, but internally, and a local garage screwed it up for me by putting in wrong sensor and boiling it dry, but I still love her, and she will be fixed...................

You can't sell it with all those faults anyway, otherwise you will get absolutely sweet FA for it!!

The choices are -

Sell it as it is at a big loss

Fix the issues and enjoy

Fix the issues and sell at a smaller loss

Alternator - £90 from VW

Starter - £65 exchange (ECP)

TAX - Up to what ever a year costs now, £180?

Service - DIY - £50ish in parts.

There, the world isn't quite so harsh after all, eh?! :-)

I was getting quoted over £200 for the alternator and 6 hours labour for the alternator, starter motor and an hour for the sensor (£210). Surely it would'nt take them that long. Are they having me on...

Would it be better buying the parts myself and getting them to fit it.

I suppose the service wont be too bad, but I would need the book stamped.

All I don't need is for the MOT to show anything else up.

Don't sell, you'll regret it!

Their labour estimate seems a bit high to me... is it a specialist garage? Could be they're quoting high cos they don't know the car, and hence can't easily estimate how long it'll all take.

See this thread http://the-corrado.net/.archive/forum/viewtopic.php?t=47541&highlight= for some thoughts on whether a stamped service book is worth all that.

And get someone to run VAG-COM to trace the ABS fault - that way you'll not have to pay the garage for diagnosis time.
