How much for a basic VW service!?

Recommended Posts

I've just popped into City VW to get a quote for a basic 70k oil, lubricant, and vehicle check service and they have quoted "a bit over £200 sir.." Apparently it's that high as it's a large engine so it need more oil

I asked how much it would be if i provided my own oil and apparently I can't do that as it's part of the package..

I don't really need a VW technician to tell me my ashtray needs replacing and my carpet matts were worn (listed from the last survey) I just want someone to change the oil and give me that stamp.

Am I being tight or is this really too much.

Can anyone reccomend any VM dealers either in London, Surrey or Bucks please who will talk to me like a normal person rather than a walking wallet..

£200 is a lot for a stamp in the book mate. You can guarantee they'll use Quantum Gold too, which after 6 litres, will add up. They'll then plug it into the diagnostics and gleefully tell you need X, Y and Z!

All the vehicle checks (bar the diags unless you have VAG-COM) can be done by yourself. A mate was charged £15 for a washer fluid top up for heavens sake.

Also, a recent survey found over half of all UK mechanics, even main dealer ones, aren't actually qualified to do the job anyway.

If you plan on keeping the car for a long time, sod the flaming service book. Do it yourself for less than half the price.

You can pay 45 quid for an Oil change which is expensive but they will stamp the book.

The funny thing about the Oil is they will actually use Castrol GTX Magnetec which is twice as expensive as the 'recomended' Syntha they sell!

On one of my old service reciepts they have charged for no less than 3 air filter elements and they also tried to charge a mate of mine for 5 spark plugs for his... wait for it... '5 cylinder' 1.4 Golf!

Having 3 Superchargers is just showing off

On one of those 'Garages from hell' type programs, some poor punter got charged for 4 x spark plugs for their diesel engine. What was even more worrying was the punter didn't know any better :?

rawhide, you might find it cheaper....if you are needing the stamp in the book to supply the oil(they should do this if you say you are buying the oil from them......as i've been caught out before paying near enough £40+ just for oil they buy in bulk) and also ask just for an "annual inspection" instead of a service you'll be surprised by how cheap this can be.....as i was quoted £150 for an annual service over £95 for an annual inspection.....both prices were with me supplying the oil for basically a glorified oil and filter change

ok there is obviously more to the service than the inspection......but if you want to keep the FVWSH up then it works out cheaper doing it this way and finding a good VW specialist to do other routine and more labour intensive jobs
