oil cooler problem

Recommended Posts

I fitted a mocal 13 row cooler to my vr about a month ago but it doesn't seem to be working properly. The oil temps still rose to 140 degrees on the track. I thought the thermostat on the sandwich plate may have been faulty so I swapped it for a new s-plate yet the temps still seem to rise and the car still runs at 100+ degrees. Does anybody know any likely causes of the problem? Is it possible to have an air lock which prevents the oil circulating? What temps should I be seeing if the oil cooler is functioning properly? :(

Thanks

Ben

Try blocking the cooler and see if it makes a difference. If the engine doesn't run any hotter then it's not doing it's job.

My mocal gives me readings of 94-98 with moderate driving and around 102-104 when pushing it. Prior to it's fitment I was getting 114 cruising at 80 mph!

Check you have no kinks in the hoses and when the engine is running and oil above 80 degrees, feel the hoses and they should pulsate, indicating a flow.

Where did you mount the cooler? It might not be getting enough air.

Mine's in front of the radiator.

I have mounted it directly behind the plastic grille (has the slots cut out), infront of the radiator. My hoses are straight. Should the cooler (radiator) get hot?-I have felt it and it always feels cold. I have taken a hose off to make sure oil is flowing into the cooler and that seems ok. :?

Yep it should be hot, just like the water radiator.

Did you check the other hose to see if that was wet with oil aswell?

You might have a duff one with an internal blockage or something.

I'll check both hoses. Is it possible to get an air lock in the hoses or cooler? . The only other thing I can think of is that the cooler was filled with oil then left for about a year before I fitted it. Could it have become sludged up?

I swapped my original thermostatic sandwich plate for a new 90 degree item but I have yet to examine both hoses and check for blockages. Should you be able to blow through the cooler?

corradovr6sc, I have a cooler fitted on my G60 Golf. It runs under 80degrees most of the time. On trackdays it can go up to 125 or so. The thing I see with mine is that the temps drop like a stone as soon as you get off the gas on to the warm up reg.

I reckon yours is going ok. If you do plenty of trackdays, then maybe a bigger radiator would be a good idea.
