Rear calipers question (changes between years?)

I need new rear calipers as mine seem to be binding. I know about the MK4 upgrade option but was Googling around and found out about this company:

I emailed for a quote on some rebuilt calipers and they came back to me saying something about my 94 car being on a changeover date and that the cost between the old and new versions of the calipers being quite significant. They've asked me for casting numbers / part numbers off my old calipers but as I don't have a jack I can't get the car up / wheel off to have a look.

 

I'm personally not sure this is the case. I thought the rear calipers would be the same on the 2.0 16v for its entire lifespan. Can anyone else advise?

hrrrmmm not heard anything about that. Personally I will do the mkIV upgrade when my MOT is due in March.

Obviously I would like to do the MK4 upgrade, but their rebuild procedure looks very good and the calipers are warrantied for 12 months which is all you're gonna get from the VW parts anyway unless i'm mistaked? And if the prices come in significantly cheaper than the MK4 upgrade then its got to be worth a sniff!

I'd go mk4 Jim - keep an eye on eBay for cheap new calipers - I just bought another for £20 inc postage

Do you need new carriers or do MK4 ones just bolt onto the existing carriers - i'm aware that you need the goodridge conversion hoses obviously, but is that all you need?

Need to do this myself as my VR has a seized rear caliper.

 

So just to clarify, all you need is a set of calipers and the goodridge hose kit that allows you to fit mk iv calipers to a mk II.

the rear calipers changed to the mk3 style ones on a very late chassis code (after 50-P-009 000)

 

for the difference in price I'd suggest the mk3 ones, they're not apparently quite as reliable long term as the mk4's but I've had mine on since 1996 now and they're fine, when you factor in the extra cost of getting new (more costly) hoses as well as the more expensive mk4 calipers the mk3 ones look like a pretty good deal to me.

When I went to exchange mine, GSF let me exchange the mk2's for mk3's for the mk2 price, as they'd run out of mk2 ones.

Worth asking them.

Thats's all you need Yan apart from new carrier bolts and pads if needed.

 

If they're second hand I wouldn't bother unless they look almost brand new.

i'm also doing mk4 conversion. already have calipers, now looking for goodridge hose kit and pads.

 

what pads would you recommend? mk4 are too thick I think. there are different opinions abouk mk2 and mk3, so which ones are the best to fit? :)

Yeah, it's also C&R where I bought the entire upgrade kit nearly 2 years ago.

 

Apart from those dodgy fine-thread Allen bolts on the carriers (new ones from VW already seem to rust in your hand :lol:), everything went on fine.

And do the calipers look like this FINN TYPE, or do they look different (smoother/simpler)? - I ask as Ive seen two types for sale.
