Water in the oil

Recommended Posts

This is about a mk4 golf, but its all the same problem.

My mate has a fatty white deposit at the bottom of his dipstick, indicated water in the system. What causes this? And like cost to get sorted.

Cheers

Chris

Head gasket more than likely.

Note the deliberate avoidance of a joke about your mate's dipstick covered in white deposit.

as above... and if you do see loss of coolant or gaining of oil level/coffee then don't instantly assume it's the head gasket... could also be the oil heat exchanger/cooler/thingy as they can break down internally throwing oil into the water and visa-versa making you think it's a head gasket gone... :|

My 1800cc (carb) Rocco used to do get a bit of white gunky stuff on the dipstick. My mechanic said it was coz i was only doing short journeys to work. I took the car on a long motorway journey (215 miles) and hey presto, zero white gunk!!

Could be that then, he drives it 3 miles to work, 3 miles back, rarely has a journey over 5 miles, then again its about the same for my C

yeah, its a build up of condensation thats causing it.

Tell him to go for a good 20 mile + blast and then check, its should be fine after.
