DEAD FUEL PUMP

Recommended Posts

So after a great day at Stealth Racing Rolling Road day I end up getting home tied to the back of an AA van  ha ha ha

What I need is some gen on the VR6 (1995) from anybody who has details of the wiring.

It was running fine till I stopped at the local shop, got in again and she wouldn't start. Turning over fine but wouldn't fire. Bit difficult because of background noise but couldn't hear the fuel pump, all fuses ok so assumed it had died.

Anyway, tonight's check results:

Fuses ok

Relay 12 swapped with spare makes no difference.

Fuse box, relay removed, pin 6 on box (relay pin 30) reads 12.5v

Replace relay and check volts at the plug on top of the tank: turning ign on the voltage momentarily up to 7v then immediately drops to 0v; then cranking engine the voltage reappears at 10v

Remove relay and jumper the power from pin 6 on the fuse box direct to the pump socket (other pin earthed) and the pump runs fine with an indicated voltage of 11.6v and engine starts and runs fine.

Suspect the relay control voltage, replace relay and when switching ign on can feel the relay come in then drop out (can also hear it).

Remove relay and check voltage on fuse box pin 2 (relay pin 86) and get 11.9v with ign on (the voltage stays there while ign is on), and 9.9v cranking engine (Repeated this on the 16V and got 12.16 and 9v respectively.

This is weird. I am now thinking that there may be a high R on the earthy side of the relay winding and this is where I need a wiring diagram. Can someone please tell me which plug on the back of the fuse box connects with relay 12, and what the pin out wiring colours are?

Or perhaps, is there some naughty thing in the supply line between the ign switch and the relay that I don't know about?

Cheers guys

Ooh, two posts I've read in a row where I can put:

"Could be a dodgy ignition switch causing hassles... They've been known to make all sorts of weird things happen when they're failing... :?

For the £12 they cost and less than an hour on your back swearing, it's worth doing it just for the peace of mind... 8) "

I'll have a look at my Bentley manual in a bit if no-one else puts up anything more knowledgeable and see if I can spot anything on the wiring diagrams... 8)

Have you checked to see how much current the pump is drawing when you bypass the relay? If it's excessive, could be causing the relay to shut the connection down.

Just a thought....

if its any consaltion chris.....my storm was delivered  to my local VW-dealers today on the back of a recovery truck with what seems to be the same fault

mine cut-out/stalled at a round-a-bout then would'nt fire up again.....pushed it off the road and tried restarting it.......just for it to idle very roughly for approx 1-2 secs then cut-out......i'll let you know the diagnosis as soon as i find out

Thanks for the thoughts guys,

Henny - that's an interesting possibility, I hadn't considered that initially since everything else at the 'ign on' point seems to working. Hopefully getting some wiring info from supercharged which will help me no end.

Kevhaywire - haven't measured that but don't think its a pump overcurrent problem as the relay not holding occurs with the pump disconnected; and I'm pretty confident the pump is ok. That might indicate an overcurrent problem if the wiring is damaged so will have to look into that. Don't know what it should draw, but at least I can compare it with the other car :) Like the new avatar

Roddy - sorry to hear that. It will be interesting to see whether we have the same fault. Anybody know exactly what was wrong with James Shillaw's on CCGB EGM day?

His car just cut out completly driving up the A14 - was definetly the fuel pump that had failed.

well they found the problem with mine! :D .....my fuel pump had packed in completely....so new fuel pump supplied and fitted by the local VW-dealer....also got them to give the storm its annual inspection(just 4 weeks earlier than normal)and also got the brake fluid renewed at the same time.......anyway i was £355inc vat and all parts....which i thought wasn't too bad as there was some fault-finding needed too........so thats the storm ramped and stamped for another year

What is it with VR fuel pumps just recently? On the way to work this morning and I cut out and couldn't restart my VR6. No prior warning!

The fuel pump runs if it is constantly tapped with a screw driver in the tank!

£111 from main dealer!

Easy enough job anyone???

If you are a CCGB member, The pump is £70+vat from the dealer through the Partsclub.

Fairly easy job to change, unless you have a full tank of fuel!! - has a light bulb type fitting.

Dunno mate, same could be said with Sunrooves and ignition switches!

It's always the way, as soon someone mentions either of the above, a wave of people all fall down with the same problem, maybe we should delete the problems section and just keep schtum!!

Anyway......it is an easy job.

Get a pump from G&S as it's cheaper and made by Bosch (as per the VW one), then.....

1) Remove boot carpet

2) Remove 3 self tapping screws from the large black cover plate and lift the plate away.

3) Get a large screwdriver or blunt instrument and tap the large white retaining ring's ridges with a hammer anti-clockwise to slowly remove it. If you've got a huge plumber's wrench, you can use that instead.

4) pull the hoses off the pump, noting their orientation.

5) Do the same with electrical connections.

6) Now...the pump is clipped to the bottom of the tank and it needs a good twist and yank from memory.

7) Once out, remove the float mechanism (as the float on the G&S pump is wrong).

8) Put the original float mechanism on the G&S pump (after binning the supplied - Golf VR6 - float system).

9) Aquaint the new pump with the motion potion and push down and twist (again, from memory)

10) Reattach all the gubbins from the previous steps.

11) Start car and enjoy

I'm not sure if the VW pump comes with a float and fuel level sender or not, but use VW stuff if you don't want to muck about swapping floats/senders over etc.

Thanks for your advice.

Was a piece of cake.

But........ I blatantly ignored which direction the float points in the tank.

The gauge is now reading wrong so this position is wrong.

Theres only two more options so I guess its trial and error!!

Cheers

Dave
