Misfire and loss in power!!!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys!! Need some serious help, i've had my corrado for about 8 months now and it was working fine for 2 months until I took it for a drive on the M1. Coming back from Luton the car started to lose power and it just would'nt accelerate. I pulled over to the hard shoulder, switched off the engine and started it again after a few minutes it fired up and I continued my journey, where after half a mile it did it again, again I did the same thing and after a few times of repeating this it was fine.

I've had a diagnostic done on the car and the garage found nothing wrong but said it may be a fuel pump prob, I changed the pump in the fuel tank and the ISV, and checked all the hoses for fuel and vacuum leaks. But problem still occurs. I get a loud popping sound from the exhaust. I've taken it to 3 garages and no one could pinpoint the prob but they all suspect that its a fuel issue.

Has anyone else had this prob with there car??

By the way its a 2.0 16V '93 model

Cheers :!:

it probably is........going by the amount that have had their ones go in recent weeks.....inc me :( must be all this cold weather taking its toll on them

one other thing tho.....although its not really fuel related as such but might be causing you some grief.......have you checked all the other simple stuff like plugs/leads/dizzy cap/rotor arm etc

Sounds like a similar problem to what I had on my 16v, turned out to be the hall sender in the distributor that was knackered and the problem got worse as the car heated up. Stop for 10 minutes and it would run fine again for another few miles.

Im sure the garage would have checked for this though.

If it turns out to be the main fuel pump then ive got a brand new one for sale that I bought in error, pm for details if your interested.

Joe M, you may have hit the mark there, the garage did say that the hall sender unit was damaged, but said that it should make no difference, and hence did'nt bother!! Is it an expensive part to replace and can I do it myself, and what does it do???

In response to VR6Storm, I have changed the plugs/leads/cap/rotor arm etc

cheers guys

The hall sender is the multi plug connector on distributar, mines just gone on my car, u can buy the sender on its own and replace yourself but i heard it takes some time so i just bought a whole new distributar

I dont know the exact details of what it does but its something along the lines of letting the ecu know when the engine is at tdc so it then knows when to spark.

On mine I found when it wasnt running that if I removed an ht lead and put a screwdriver in it holding it near the engine then got someone to turn the engine over that it would spark once then nothing. If it keeps sparking then its probably ok.

On the 2.0 16v it cant be replaced on its own, you will need a new distributor, cant remember the price but im sure I paid a good bit over £100 for a new one. :x

Cheers Joe M, I think the problem is exactly what you say it is cos when the problem does occur then the engine just runs really bad, and when I turn it off and then turn it immediately back on its as if the ECU has rebooted itself and then a minute or so later it does it again!!

Cheers guys!! :)
