Sunroof won't slide closed again!

Recommended Posts

The sunroof is playing about again. It will tilt open and closed, will slide open but won't slide back. The cars a '93 will the later style sunroof motor with the allen key to manually operate it if you take the roof light assembly out.

Any ideas why it won't slide back? Seems free enough when manually closing it. How does the motor know the sunroof is closed? The motor seems to de-activate when its closed to stop the motor burning, thinking maybe this is the fault.

Cheers.

Let me get this straight... The roof winds back properly by hand but not on the motor?

If this is correct, then the mechanism hasn't broken, it's just that the motor hasn't got the torque to overcome the resistance of the mechanism.

Take the motor out and grease it + all of the runners when the roof is fully back... The runners are very long and can cause some serious amounts of resistance to the movement if not properly greased. I had this problem with my C when I first got it after I'd just changed the mechanism for a new one (old one was well dead!) :?

If greasing it doesn't help (it may need assistance a few times before it's free enough to go on it's own) then you probably need a new motor, but I'd also check that you're getting a nice clean 12V to the motor before handing out cash for a new motor... 8)

A bit of grease and all should be well again... 8)

Thanks for the reply Henny. Sorry, reading back myself and not so clear...

The motor can slide the sunroof open but can't close it again. I then have to manually close it using the allen key, which felt quite free to me.

What sort of grease is best to use, LM, graphited, copper?

I'll check the 12v tonight to make sure.

What Allen key?... how do you manually set back and is it a standard sized allen key that is required or did it come specially with the car?

I'd use something like a graphite one which should be perfect.

Even though it may have felt quite free to you, you've got to remember that an allen key on the end of your hand can produce a whole hell of a lot more torque to turn the mechanism than a small motor like the sunroof one... :?

HiAsAKite there's a standard sized (can't remember but think it's a 6mm) allen key hole in an underside bit of the motor. You remove the interior lamp and housing and you can get at it easier... I'm not sure if it was there on the earlier motors though... I've seen people drill a small hole in the cover just in case!

Yep the actual allen key you need (shaped like a crank handle) is clipped to the motor housing, very kind of VW to supply that.

On the motor is a little black plastic cap which you slide across, revealing the emergency crank hole, into which you insert the allen key. Turn clockwise to tilt and anticlock wise to slide back. The plastic cap has a microswitch in it, so you must close it again in order to use the motor again.

Yeah, Almost like they could see the future!!!

Yeah, CHEERS VW!!

:lol::lol:

You get one with Beemas too but you never need to use it :?

Interestingly some BMW tilt/slide roofs are also made by Rockwell international, so where did they go wrong with the Passat/Corrado ones??
