What age do you want, and body style? CSW? Van? Pickup? Hi Cap Pick up?

 

There's a lot of reasonable cheap motors around, just need to look in the right places. Stay away from LRO and all the "Let's Off-Road" goons. They pay too much money, and big wheels, high lift kits, bull bars, winches, Paris-Dakar style lights are all expensive rubbish and will cause you more problems. If you do pick one with alloys, make sure they have the right wheel nuts, they're £5/each from Land Rover (i.e £100 a set) or can be found cheaper secondhand.

CSW would also concider a SIII not going to {"LETS OFF ROAD"} so am not bothered about silly stuff bars ect just want a bit of a crate thats simple mechanically with a good chassis and bulkhead, i would put steel wheels on it myself anyhow as i have always hated alloys { rim leakers }

Wouldn't bother with a Series 3. For £2k you're into used 200tdi territory. I had a K plater at work a few years ago and thought it was awesome (for a landrover) Look out some of the smaller landrover specialists, they'll find you a bargain, any of the bigger places such as Keith Gott etc will charge you top wack.

 

I hate them personally. I think the japanese out do LR in a big way. Even the new defender hasn't dealt with the crap driving position. They're not fun to work on either. We've got a very early td5 on an S and the rear crossmember needs serious attention already. They only survive in africa because there's no rain to rot them out. Talking of which, pay a lot of attention to the bulkhead they're a weakpoint.

in the past i have had a 1998 disco then later a freelander i found that both made a good work vehicule, but this time round i'm looking for something that i won't have to worry to much about, what with "car park door bangers" and the norwich union giving out insurance to people that shouldn't be driving, {rant explained}= in under one year two N,U drivers have ran into my corrado and exepted full liability also i have three "door banger chips" on the pasenger side and a small scratch,.. feckers!

 

anyhow i like CSW 110 and yeh your dead right about the 200tdi, its my preferred engine .

CSW ticks all the boxes for me i'll be able to put my little boy in the back at weekends and when its time for work chuck a load of gear in the hold

as i said i only want to spend 2k and am a few weeks off my target amount at present

A few mates of mine have built 110s CSWs with the two front rows of seats and a solid back rather than one wih windows. Ideal for keeping tools and stuff in and you can fit a few people in it.

thought i would fit a few lockable box's in the rear with big padlocks and staples {you know the sort} and keep windows for visability ,

 

just been on autotrader site saw a nice blue csw for 2450£ shame it has 2.5 petrol though! 18 to 23 mpg is unacceptable

I love land rovers. My dads had them for years, his latest bein a proper weapon. Its got one of those BMW TD5 (2.5 litre, 5 cyl) and it goes like stink!! Also dead reliable (Will probably break now ive said that)

The TD5 engine is based on the perkins 2l turbo deisel used in the rover 200 series... Not enough lowdown torque for towing IMO, unless you've had the map changed.

 

Oh, BTW Rob, tell your dad to have the centrifugal oil filter changed every service, not every 3 like they say, they fail and your turbo eats itself. Trust me on that one. It's only £20 odd for the filter so better safe than sorry.

We did both of them at xmas. Will be due again shortly. We've had no problems when towin, think the close gears make towin easy imo
