wandee 0 Posted July 21, 2007 Bit of a strange one this, I have a slight crunch when putting the car into 1st gear...but I have found ways to avoid it. Obviously something is amiss though. When standing still and dipping the clutch and immediately selecting 1st gear I get the crunch. However if I dip the clutch and then wait 3-4 seconds the crunch does not happen. Also from a stand still, if I dip the clutch and select 2nd gear and then immediately go into 1st I dont get the crunch either. When driving and coming to a halt and going to drop down into first it barely wants to know. The car has to be pretty much at a standstill before I can get into 1st gear....although I have developed a technique where I partially move the lever into first, feel the resistance, back off into neutral and then select 1st. This sounds to me like worn 1st gear syncromesh but I here that 'Rado gearboxes are adjustable...does my problem sound familiar and cureable? If not then has anyone used MTL Redline in their gearboxes to get rid of crunchy/notchy gearboxes? MK2 Golfs are notorious for 2nd gear crunch and this oil is supposed to improve matters greatly and I wonder if it will improve mine?

jonny-5 0 Posted July 22, 2007 Places like Stealth will do linkage alignment, not sure if that'll fix it but it may help

Walesy 0 Posted July 22, 2007 Have a search mate, i'm pretty sure there's a thread somewhere describing how to adjust the cables properly. EDIT - here : viewtopic.php?f=23&t=55679
kongo127 0 Posted July 22, 2007 After getting the linking, and if no luck. You can start thinking about a clutch issue i guess... I only had the famous 2nd gear crunch, i replaced the gearbox oil with some MT90. I fixed about 90% of the crunches! Have you tried it?

No I haven't tried it yet but will definitely do so this weekend. How many litres do I need for a Corrado VR6 gearbox?

Is MT90 thicker/better than MTL? mt90 is the correct spec for your box..slightly thicker i think g60s take 2 quarts...not sure if vr6 is the same?
