Boge or Bilstein? + Brilliant priced Mechanical work

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I have just ordered a stack of Parts including 4 new Bilstein Shocks from Euro Car Parts. I also had the choice of Boge. Which are the better dampers?

Also I have discovered the best value garage on the planet, £75 to fit 4 shocks, 2 x rear discs + wheel bearings and a fluid change. New top mounts, top mount bearings and bump stops. I met the mechanic "Matt" at No Rice and he is ex VAG. Stuff is being fitted Saturday, will let you know how I get on.

Arrow Service Centre

304, High St

Waltham Cross Hertfordshire

EN8 7ED

Tel: 01992 641550

The AA wanted £350 + VAT, a garage in Farnham 200 + VAT.

My thoughts exactly, sounds far too cheap - even at £30 an hour (half price labour). Takes more than 2 hours to fit 4 shocks and 2 rear disks.

Took me about half a day on my old golf to do the same but some of the nuts were an absolute git to get off!

I have fitted boge dampers on a Vauxhall- Found them very good- very much like OE kit but just a little extra stiffness. Have got bilsteins on the Corrado now- love them but they are a little bit hard

Cheers

Mike

I paid £100 to have 4 springs fitted, new top mount & top mount bearings up front, new rear bumpstops and the tracking and wheel alignment done too..

The kind chap also changed the oil & oil filter for me too... :D

Bleedin' hell....

I pay £120 just for fitting front springs/shocks & four wheel alignment!

Boge & Bilstein both make good quality dampers, I found that Boge turbogas are quite uprated?

Well, I watched them do the whole job and they were pretty thorough and professional, they have all the gear as well - Strap-On etc. Matt the spannerman was wearing his VAG overalls and was happy to talk as he went along. His MK2 is really nice and he has done a number of 16V conversions, he is also a regular at No Rice.

Bilsteins are ROCK HARD. The car has also risen somewhat. Looking for soft coil springs any ideas?

Did you keep the original springs? I can understand the rear end rising with new shocks & spring assistors, but the front end shouldn't!

Were they Bilstein GAS shocks? I was thinkin of getting some of those

Everything has setlled down now. The ride is back in order, or I have got used to it. Bilsteins are recommended. Cheap as chips at EuroCarParts.

I stayed with the original springs, but wish I had lowered it.

I thought the Boge turbo gas were standard rate. Are they uprated????

Makes sense I suppose as Boge do sell gas and turbo gas ones.

Well years back I bought TurboGAS for a polo, they are definately uprated 20% sports shocks. To confuse the situation, for some applications these shocks are painted yellow and labelled turbogas, but for others they are black and just look like standard shocks. they were very firm!

I've decided i'm going for GSF Boge 40mm springs & Bilstein GAs shocks, will report back when It's fitted!
