Is this a leaky sump gasket? - pic

Recommended Posts

noticed this on my car, might explain why i get through so much oil. I can't see it coming from anywhere above, certainly seems to be coming out of the joint in two bits of metal you can see

Have a look around anywhere else just to confirm thats its not coming from anywhere else as oil just gets everywhere..

Probably altho a small leak is not a particuarly bad thing - that needs sorting...

Get a new sump while your at it (and bolts) - VR6 sumps are nice and cheap!

ok i have had this on neaarly all my vw's, it looks like a sump leak and afer replaceing the gasket and all it ended up being the rear crank seal which is a box of job, so if your due a clutch change any time soon it be worth doing it. i have always replaced the seal atleast the once when i have done the clutch jut to have the peace of ming, the seals around 8+vat quid from GSF

I need to replace the sump gasket on mine but GSF have quoted two differnt part numbers. Anyone know which one is the correct one? Mine is a 94 VR. TIA.

It could also be a leak between the 2 halves of the timing chain cover; it is split at the line of the head gasket and held together there by two vertical bolts with the head gasket between. The bolts can work loose and even fall out and then oil drips down to the engine/gearbox area. It's worth checking that before you start taking off the transmission.

Best wishes
