Replacement for Bora - SAAB bought today

Recommended Posts

Bora has unexpectedly been collected this morning, now need a replacement quickly.

Two choices:

1. BMW 528i (192bhp) SE Touring manual reg'd Jul 99 - metallic silver, full BMWSH, sat nav, rear dvd system, Xenons, beige sports leather seats, 126k on the clock, absolutely immaculate, price new was 48k, will come with 12 months MOT, 12 months tax - £4,000

or

2. Saab 9-5 2.3 Aero Estate (250bhp) auto, reg'd 2000, full Saab SH, leather metallic silver, cruise etc, 49k on the clock, again absolutely immaculate, will come with warranty and 12 months MOT - £4600

or

3. Saab 9-5 2.3 Aero Estate (250bhp), manual, reg'd 1999, full Saab SH, dark met blue, leather, cruise etc, 115k on the clock, 12 months MOT, 12 months warranty £3,900

Just arranged to see a car that I hadn't previously considered - mind you they did only make 155 of them - 2000 plate Mondeo ST200 estate - absolute mint by all accounts - only 2 owners and 41k from new

either of the saabs 8)

my old man had a 520i se touring form new and literally as soon as the 3 year warranty ran out he had no end of problems with it, rear suspension packed up whilst he was in ireland and he wasnt a happy bunny.

go for a saab, be a bit differnt.....

Higher mileage Saab is up at £3900 but bloke selling it is a top bloke, independant Saab specialist who has been happy to give me lots of advice and guidance. Seems like a well maintained Saab 9-5 will go to the moon and back, he runs an identical car that has just clocked quarter of a million miles and is still on original turbo and clutch

Playing Devil's unbranded-warninks-advocaat-70cl-bottle.jpg:

Had a Sabb 9000 and was the biggest pile of Cr@p I have ever owned... I got fed up of fixing it and just drove it into the ground.. had only done 125k when scrapped too...

Mostly cooling and inj issues.... oh and a snapped front Coil spring "forced me to lower it" as well that was the best thing I ever did as it drove like a super-tanker...

I doubt I'd ever put my own money into a Saab ever again.. and if you think VAG spares are expensive... I spent so much time in Scrappies pulling parts off wrecked 9000's...

Been looking at a 9-5 for myself as a daily workhorse. Lots of car for the money. Plus if its a late car you would think they would have worked all the faults out of it. It is different in a good way. Also its still one of the safest cars on the road today. I argued at a merc garage about which car got 5 stars in the euro ncap test. S class merc or a saab 9-5. Either way it gives you good odds in a smash. Also some diesels come with a programmable aux heater so no more cold car mornings. Look out for lcd readouts going wrong. happened to just about all or them.

I would also go for the Manual Saab I dont really like the look of the saloon version but the estate is quite a nice looking car.

The two people i know who have owned SAAB's didn't have a bad word to say about them, both old SAAB 900 turbo's one had 150k on it and still drove like new without a single fault in the two years he owned it, apart from cracking the turbo and bending the exhaust after he reversed it into a high curb  , and the other one had 270k on the clock and the only things it had wrong with it in the two years he owned it where worn out suspension bushes and a couple of dodgy injectors.

The newer SAAB's seem to have lost the old man stigma they used to have but i dont think you can say the same about BMW loosing its tosser stigma  . although the estate version also looks nicer than the saloon version IMO

I'd be aware that the pre 2001 9-5's shared a bit too much in common with the Vauxhall Vectra, after 2001 they made enough changes for them to handle reasonably.

Been to have a look at the lower mileage auto Saab this afternoon as a benchmark - very clean and tidy but the auto is definitely not for me - also the dealer was just a used car dealer, prefer to buy from a specialist to be honest.

Gives me a good guide for when I look at the higher mileage manual Aero on Saturday afternoon though , this is the place I'm looking to buy from - just put down a refundable deposit on the car to secure it until Sat

refundable deposit

So they do exist then?

There's some nice cars on that site. Sound like decent guys. Did they work with Saab before setting up on their own?

Yes, both partners are from a Saab main dealer background, spent an hour on the phone today - came across as very decent.

Said that Saabs tend to be owned by people who don't want to drive the default choice BMW, Audi and Mercedes. Apparently Saab have the highest customer retention rate of any manufacturer in the UK and that they tend to be kept for longer and for higher mileages than other comparable cars.

manual saab dont like the stigma that goes with a bmw and at least you might stand half a chance of getting out of a side street in a saab :D

Damned Pistonheads classifieds has thrown up another car for consideration that I'm now going to view before the Saab tomorrow - pretty rare, not got a great badge on the nose but is very highly regarded and the car itself looks like an absolute minter - nice V6 in it too

Viewed and bought a Saab today

2000 W plate 9-5 Estate, 2.3T Aero - so just the 250bhp to play with

Full Saab service history and absolutely immaculate both inside and out. 115k on the clock but you'd never tell, either from the way it looks or the way it drives.

Full cream heated leather, CD, alarm, all round electric windows, r/c locking, trip computer, cruise control, electronic dual zone climate control etc

Trader would not budge on price but did say it would come with a full MOT, he'll get the only dent I could find popped out, 12 months warranty, 6 months tax and a full tank of fuel

All in all not a bad buy for £3,900
