Replacement for Bora - SAAB bought today

Recommended Posts

I went to see an immaculate Mondeo ST200 estate that had done 74,000 miles less than the Saab. The thing that swung it for me was when I shut the door on the Mondeo - it kind of "clanged" shut whereas on the Saab it was a really deep thud.

Seriously impressed with Saab 9-5's, might not be the best handling cars but the spec, reliability and friendliness of the few Saab specialists I have spoken to has been a real eye-opener. Strange that the most relaible 9-5's tend to be the ones with the 2.3 high output turbo lumps. Frightening to think that of the three cars in the family the Passat with 190bhp is the least powerful.

Last point is the insurance, its actually only £20 per year more expensive than the Bora despite being a lot more powerful - £395 fully comp, protected NCDlegal cover etc

Nice car Andy.

2000 will be the 230bhp not the 250, 250 came along in late 2001 with the facelift.

Most ofthe 230's make nigh on 250 anyhow especially during overboost.

You might recognise my username over on UKSaabs - think im member no.3  , helped out on there since it was born with my mate David who started it all (now dearly departed God Bless his Soul),

Used to own the car love of my life - Tuned C900 T16S which i built up from a bit of a dog.

Lets say it was one of if not the quickest back when i had it..

TD04 15t-6 Turbo (9000 Aero turbo),

Volvo FMIC,

Water Injection

MSD Boost timing master

ERL MF2 Injector driver

8 Injectors etc

And a gearbox made of swiss cheese

First thing you want to do with your 9-5 is get the sump dropped and the strainer cleaned....trust me on this...

Looks like a nice motor Andy! Never really considered a Saab but I don't know why. I'm actually pretty stunned that it packs 230BHP! A bit unassuming but potent like the more powerful Volvo's it seems!

Have heard about the sump strainer issue and its top of my "to do" list

Good call.

A few independants do it with a oil change for about 150 squid perhaps a bit less.

Other than the sump strainer issue and the PCV updates they are a solid engine.

Check with Saab to see if yours has had the recall for the most upto date PCV mod

I'll check tomorrow.

Looks like dropping the sump and cleaning the strainer is a job that I should be able to tackle myself

I did consider Volvo T5's but they don't seem to wear the miles as well as the Saabs do, a lot of them havefallen into real bargain basement territory - actually found it quite difficult to find a car within my price range, even more so when you factor in that I wanted a manual
