Joe M 0 Posted November 19, 2003 I need a new clutch, I suspected it of slipping last night and tonight confirmed it, foot to the floor in third, and once it hits about 35mph the revs jump up and the speed doesnt. :x Couldnt have come at a worse time either with the rr day a week on Sunday. So, I know the clutch will need replaced for a start, possibly worth doing the timing chains and tensioners, depending on wear since its that side of the engine. Anything else? Also, what clutch? Go for the standard (was good for 105k) or uprated? Im considering a supercharger for next year so edging towards uprated, but which one? What about the flywheel? Just get this one cleaned up or get a lightened one? I was going to order a turn2 crank pulley but im thinking id be as well getting the flywheel instead as its going to be in bits anyway. All thoughts appreciated and considered, even crazy ones suggesting Quafe diffs and 6 speed boxes.
VR6 0 Posted November 19, 2003 Well I know my numbers didn't come up tonight, but I guess someone's did! :D I'd say that if you have the money to spare then it might be worth doing the chains and tensioners and maybe the flywheel and crank pulley while you're at it. Good excuse to change quite a few bits at the end of the day!
Joe M 0 Posted November 19, 2003 Well I know my numbers didn't come up tonight, but I guess someone's did! :D If only, a lot of it is probably wishful thinking but im still open to all suggestions and like you said, its an excuse to change bits.
dubster82 0 Posted November 19, 2003 make i a beast for the RR day!!!! do all above lol :D:D:D
Joe M 0 Posted November 19, 2003 tbh, if I dont go for a standard replacement I wouldnt be surprised if its not ready for the day.
Joe M 0 Posted November 19, 2003 At the moment looking like an uprated sachs clutch (150ish from c&r, standard sachs is about 95) and possibly the quaife diff. 6 speed box is a nono as its about £1500 just for the gearkit, not to mention fitting. Flywheels are also very expensive (from ridgewayracing at least) so ill probably go for the turn2 crank pulley at some point in the future, as its easy enough to change seperatly. dubster82 0 Posted November 19, 2003 diff? do it man, im lookin at gettin one for next year too with an uprated clutch :D:D:D Crank pulleye is supposed to be goo too, if you can get the old one off
corradovr6sc 0 Posted November 19, 2003 my clutch never slips on 6psi. Got a luk clutch which is a bit juddery when cold but doesn't slip.
Joe M 0 Posted November 21, 2003 Looks like Star Performance have got the job, good price and im getting a standard clutch and Quaife diff. Jim reckons the standard clutches are very good anyway (mine lasted 105k) and the chains dont ever need touched, just the tensioners when they wear. Next day delivery on the parts so should be ready for the rr day. :D
Nick_Micouris 0 Posted November 21, 2003 is it really necessary to change the belt tensioner?? I thought they were good for life, like the chain?
Joe M 0 Posted November 21, 2003 Not necessary at all, im actually not getting the chain or tensioners touched as there not noisy at all. Its just a case of replace if worn which mine dont seem to be.
dan 0 Posted November 21, 2003 Yes Joe ...you're getting exactly what I would have gone for ...Quaife diff 'oh yes' ...if its good enough for the RS Focus it should be very 8) How much for the diff btw?
Joe M 0 Posted November 21, 2003 The diff and fitting kit is about £600, and its about 8 hours labour so with the clutch as well and fitting it should be just over £1000. Not bad considering what my usual vw specialist said for just the clutch. The clutch is about £130 and about £400 labour as its a lot of work to get the box off. Star performance said about £235 all in for the clutch and fitting. 8)
dan 0 Posted November 21, 2003 'The diff and fitting kit is about £600' Is that direct from Quaife?
Joe M 0 Posted November 21, 2003 Star Performance are getting the parts in, but id imagine they get it direct. Think its just under £600, also listed on TSR's website at £562, including the fitting kit. Phoned to pay the deposit earlier on, they are very busy for the next fortnight so looks like my car is out of use for a bit. :(
dubster82 0 Posted November 21, 2003 but will still be ready for the RR day?
Joe M 0 Posted November 21, 2003 Nope, he said busy for a fortnight so I think im gonnae take it to them on the rr day and were going to run my cousins alfa on the rollers instead. Will leave the car with them till its done. :?

Fat Tony 0 Posted November 22, 2003 How much strain goes on the chain? The only reason I ask was when I had my bike the chain had to be replaced often. I know there is a slight difference as it is effectively the drive shaft. But the links do form a fair bit of movment over time. Joe are you still using Tam for your general repairs?
Joe M 0 Posted November 22, 2003 No idea about the strain, its not exposed to the elements like a bike chain though. Tam? Donaldsons? If so I got them to rebuild the cylinder head on my 16v, when I got the vr I took it to Bedrock for a few things but havent really had any general repairs required. I think after this though the next thing will be the brakes, ill do the fronts myself but probably take it to Donaldsons for the rears.
Fat Tony 0 Posted November 22, 2003 Who and where are Bedrock?

Kevin Bacon 5 Posted November 22, 2003 my clutch never slips on 6psi. Got a luk clutch which is a bit juddery when cold but doesn't slip. Yeah the VR clutch is a strong old beast. Uprated ones not really required unless you are running some very major mods, in which case a centreforce or Helix Autosport kit might be in order. Funny how they judder when cold....but that only seems to happen when you change out the original factory fit one. I've had two SACHs fitted recently, the first one juddered so got it redone and the second and current one also judders. I've given up on it and just live with it now. Regarding Quaiffes. I've driven a MK1 2.0 8V with a Quaiffe and I can tell you it is a good upgrade. The cornering is unbelievable, the diff pulls you round the corner. Takes a bit of getting used to. Hopefully a Quaiffe in a VW won't be as nasty as it is the Focus. Bumpsteer and tramlining is horrendous in the RS. You constantly fight the steering wheel.
