VR6 versus 944 Turbo - (or Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo??)

Hi all

 

Saw an earlier thread about replacing a VR with a 944S2 or Audi TT - but how would a 944 Turbo compare with a VR? I'm thinking later 250bhp version?

 

Now - I love my VR - however, have always fancied a Porsche - BUT - I find it difficult to think of it being better all round than a Corrado - (and Evo Mag seems to agree) . .

 

Just thought - what about a VR compared to a Fiat Coupe Turbo??

Did he have a 944 Turbo? I thought he had a 924?

 

944 has it's 80s porschey foibles. Corrado has it's 80s VW foibles. Take a 944 T out for a test run and stick with the lesser of two evils!

 

I would also suscribe to PPC magazine (Practical Performance Car) because they regularly do buying guides on affordable, old school high performance cars. They did the 944 a few issues back. Nothing horrendous happens to them.

What I do know from past conversations with the big man is that he's always given the nod to the Corrado as the better car overall. The interior of the 944 is pretty austere even by the standards that the Corrado sets. But I'll let him tell you himself when he sees the thread.

Interesting stuff. Funny - every time I start to think of changing the VR, I always come back to the basic rule that I'd have to spend quite a bit to beat the all round VR abilities 8)

yip I did indeed own a 944 Turbo the 220bhp one

not the best example..........had a few issues that cost me big notes

 

comparing it with my Corrado...........I'd take the C everytime as it a good allrounder with 90% of the performance of the 944 and is a lot cheaper to maintain,however the 944 especially the 250bhp version can be made to produce over 300bhp relatively easily

Thanks Rodders - that backs up all I've read recently about the 944.

 

In addition - just got my VR back from it's MOT - haven't driven it for a while and forgot how ****ing fast it is. I have an AMD rolling road printout after its' remap a while back and it dyno'd at 213 BHP - (sounds optimistic) - but if it is right - it ain't far off the 220 of a 944.

 

Think I'll stick with the VR :D

awesome motor extremely fast!!!.............just seems to have a poor image IMHO

The guy i just bought my girlfriends car from recently sold his heavily modded Fiat coupe. he said he it was 300bhp at went well, hardly gave him any problems, but the torque was still around 260? for the money he had spent, id personally want more bang for my buck MONVR.

The only Fiat worth buying though imo.

I've owned my 944 since August of '05, and the amount that Ive put into it is only in the three digit numbers, and most of the maintenance I have had to do to it is just simple oil changes and whatnot. The only time its ever left me stranded was when I got a flat tire. And it's the higher mileage of the two with almost 125k. The only downfall to the car is that I can't drive it in the winter. Of course the rado has a bit more acceleration than the 944 because the 944 doesn't have any kind of forced induction, but it definitely out-handles my rado.

 

I've owned my rado since July '07. It has just under 101k miles. I've dumped almost $1300 into it, and Im lucky if I'm not left stranded with it.

I also own a Fiat COupe 20vt,

Had it for 3 years,

Pretty much faultless in terms of reliability in that time bar normal servicing,

In the three years ive replaced:-

Nearside front wishbone, wheel bearing and hub (only because the tyre place sheared two of the four wheel bolts with an airgun!).

Central door locking actuator on pass side as it seized (doing this next wk)

Exhaust manifold (again - doing this next week) - this is adesign fault on these cars, old ones crack on no.5, noisy when cold but shuts up when warm.

 

Build quality is great, no rattles or creaks (unlike the Rado!, no rust to mention, only the front panel gets a bit scabby under the bonnet.

Watch for car park dints on the sides as the cars are very prone to it due to the curvature of the doors and no 'bump' strips on the sides.

Performance is fantastic especially with the FCCUK club chip, 40 quid and 260bhp.

you can get 300bhp pretty cheaply,so dont know what your mate had spent and why he'd spent so much? Shouldnt have done...

Great traction as Viscous Diff stock, handling is not bad, not quite in the same league as the Corrado but still V.good.

They are bargains for what they are, if i didnt already have one (well its the missus car but i paid for it!) then id have bought one for myself instead of the Corrado!

and there's the 3.0 V6

Theres a Fiat Coupe specialist just outside Oxford.

 

I was looking at them for a while before getting the C.

 

On the plus side the interiors are beautiful, they have monster brakes as standard, look like a mini-supercar and go like stink!

 

On the negative side most of them seem to have had major engine rebuilds after 50-60k, suggesting they aren't the most reliable of cars.

I've driven the 250 BHP 944T and a Corrado Vr6 back-to-back.

 

The 944T feels heavier/more solid than the VR6, but quicker,

...not that much in the difference however....

Having owned a Corrado 1.8 16V for a few years and having had a VR6 for 2 years i recently bought a Fiat Coupe 20VT.

 

Finding a good example is not easy - its a bit of a minefield. I have no complaints, mine is totally standard and the performance is great with plenty of potential for increasing the performance over time as you get used to it / bored of it. That was a big factor for me in selling the VR6 and moving on to it.

 

The handling - for me - is still better in the Corrado although the Fiat is still very good. Looks wise i still love the Corrado but there are certain angles of the Fiat that i love more, but its a very individual thing - many will say the Fiat Coupe looks like a frog and is ugly!

 

Performance wise i wouldnt go back to the VR6 but i do miss the engine noise and the handling and the fact that its a classic VW!

Thats nothing to do with the reliability.

The engines are very strong, at least as strong as the VR6 etc.

Problem is the engines like a drink, the dipstick is not the easiest to read and more often than not the Coupe was bought by ladies attracted to its prettyness when new and didnt think that a new car would use 1litre of oil every 1000 miles.....

Make sure the engine has good quality synthetic and check it regulary and they will do 150000 miles+
