SO here are some pictures that were kicking around on my phone, and to show you guys what I get up to.

 

I really do do motorsport engineering! 8) :lol:

As you can see from some of the pictures, we have been given a BMW 1 Series and a Cooper S.

 

Funny thing is, they both went from the BMW Mini Plant about 5 miles away, over to Munich to be fitted with some educational stuff, and then back to Oxford! Crazy Krauts... :lol:

 

We also have a Delara race car which had a Judd V10 in, but that has gone and the powers tha be are thinking big block Chevy.

 

How they'll fit a 5.7 in where there was once a 4.0 I have no idea... :?

Met him in his ALMS days when driving the "controversial"M3 (only because it was beating Porker GT3's), was a thouroghly nice guy! and a "European" sense of humour too! His american mechanics couldn't figure him.

I used to work at http://www.adrmotorsport.com/ and we had the son of a well known blind UK MP there on his work experience while doing the same course. He's back there full time now. We had another guy there on his work experience who's now running a racing team in UAE.

 

It's a great industry to work in although the hours can sometimes be crippling, believe me! Stick at it, you never know where you'll end up. I however gave it up after a couple of years and came back to my engineering roots, I may be stuck in Saudi for the moment but the money is in a different league for sure, there might be a lot of money in motorsport but not always in the wages, of course building a winning car is priceless 8)

6 straight hours of AutoCAD.... My brain could be used in a viscous coupling... :crazyeyes: :brickwall:

:lol: :lol: ...I remember my old undergrad uni days with Autocad...I was never a big fan of that software! Not used it in a long while now! We use a horribly expensive software called Catia, basically does the same job as Autocad but is infinitely more pleasurable to use and a fair bit more powerful.

 

Good to see one of the old F-Student cars. 8) I used to work as a research assistant / aerodynamic consultant for the UCD Formula Student team a few years back. Still call in on the Brunel Formula Student team now and again, as the workshop is on the way down to my lab.

I started a computer systems engineering degree when I was 25. I know what you mean about feeling old, but I wouldn't have had the focus to get a first if I'd started earlier.

 

If I found enough money not to have to work I'd do another degree at the drop of a hat. Something along the lines of what you're doing would be high in the running too.

:lol: :lol: ....edited that bit afterwards! :oops: Basically I've been doing something 'slightly' similar to you over the last few years! Started off doing Mechatronic engineering as an undergrad, then went to do a post grad specialising in motorsport aerodynamics. As I said I spent a year doing a RA job helping out with one of the F-student teams, Now I'm just in the last few months of finishing up some research in Brunel Uni.....not too far down the road from you!

 

Anyways...I'm basically developing a cfd aerodynamic code, so I get to do a bit of validation work down in the windtunnels...just to help prove the code I'm working on isn't complete nonsense, and hopefully someone will believe what I'm talking about! :lol:

I'll go with not great wages/cr@p hours.. I used to work for Stack and left to get a life back... only 1 in 3 weekends were mine in race season as well as office during week, as as we also covered the US it was shift work till 11pm!

 

However I did get to live/work in the US for a bit and they seem to value their employees more than here... The amount of free drinks/meals I had from working with race teams out numbered the amount over here by about... a milion to one!

Quick bit of education for you...... If they are thinking Big Block Chevy then you will be looking at around 7 litres, the 5.7 is only the baby small block!

I've got a mate in the first year at Brookes doing one of the motorsport courses. Awsome looking facilities they have there.

Got bored with Uni this afternoon, so wandered off to Silverstone and got all the way into the Paddock / Pit lane due to knowing the right people 8)
