vr6 isv problem

Recommended Posts

hi, i did a bit of a search and could not find any answers, my vr throws up some fault on VAG-COM about the isv, and when im driving along and it drops to idle it will sometimes cuts out.

iv only been driving it 2 days and its done it 4 times (it also makes my stupid imobiliser cut in so i have to alarm then un-alarm the car before i can re start!!!!)

is it a case of new isv, or some how clean the current one, or is it something else all tohgether?? any suggestions please as its got me panicking whenever i come up to traffic wondering if its going to try and stall!!

Mine does the same thing, from what I know it's a pretty common problem. Can be very scary when in traffic.

I think as the revs drop the ISV gets stuck and doesn't open quick enough to maintain idle, alot of the time when i put the clutch in the little red battery light will flicker then flick off again as the ISV catches it.

You can take it off and soak it in carb cleaner overnight, this fixes the problem for a while, but sometimes they're just past saving I guess.

New ISVs are about £ 200 from the dealers apparently.

The car had been off the road for nearly 2 years so im hoping it will clear up soon, its only been back on the road a few days and didnt stall today.

it was low on fuel when i got it back on the road, i gave it a full tank of v-power a few days back, i wasnt aware the isv would be affected by the fuel . . . fingers crossed though!!

It won't be.

Better fuel might help your problem but for different reasons, especially if the car's been sat arround for ages with old fuel in it. It's just about having a stronger idle in general, never the VRs greatest strength. Make sure all of your ignition is in good order ie plugs and leads, make sure there are no air leaks in the pipework around the intake/throttlebody. Give the isv a clean, it does work wonders, I do mine every few months and it always idles better afterwards, only a 10 min job.

unfortunatly its still doing it, i know it was fine before it went of the road as i know the guy i bought it off, so i will have to take it off and give it a bit of a clean, altough im not at all sure how to clean it, i know the little black plastic thing with the pipes going into it just behind the engine has something to do with it . .

i will have a good look for it tomorrow, i have an old can of carb cleaner, that should blast any rubbish away as its obviously just got a bit gunked up or stiff being left so long.

the fact that its coming up as an error on vag-com worries me tohugh as it may suggest its more an electrical issue with it . . .

One of the guys on here sent me a PDF which tells you exactly how to take off the ISV and clean it!

This link should be valid for about a week I think.

just download (no viruses or anything to worry about, just free server space for file hosting)

Hope this helps!

Josh.

An allen key also will fit those bolts, can't remember what size though give it a go if you have a set, its what I always use!
