David Winter 0 Posted March 25, 2008 My 90a alternator has a knackered pulley bearing on my VR6. I have removed it and the belt and need new ones. I was quoted £205 for the alternator! and £28! for the Serp belt from VAG. This seems really expensive. I tried somewhere called partco from the phone book and they quoted £150 for the alt and £15 for the belt. Although this is better Im worried about the part quality and really wanted genuine parts . Any ideas guys.?
davidwort 0 Posted March 25, 2008 I'm sure if it's just the bearing that's gone then a starter/alternator refurb place could fit a new bearing for you, can't see it costing more than 30 or 40 quid to re-con. (Hours work charged plus the cost of a bearing?)
dr_mat 0 Posted March 25, 2008 You should be able to buy a ready-refurbed Bosch alternator from GSF and they'll give you some money back for your old one.
David Winter 0 Posted March 25, 2008 Cheers guys. These were exchange prices! and Im worried about any other damage to the alternator plus its 14 years old and would rather replace it I think.Ill try ringing GSF. Thanks.
Supercharged 2 Posted March 25, 2008 That price includes the exchange surcharge - rrp is £155 + vat but if you get decent discount it should be more like a ton...
was8v 0 Posted March 25, 2008 Check your local yellow pages for an alternator / starter specialist place - these type of places do them for GSF etc. They will take your alternator and recon it for much less than GSF charge if you can do without it. Theres a couple in the Bolton area. EuroCrapParts charge about £12 IIRC for a Continental brand serp belt. They have free delivery at the moment on web orders.
