Full service history

Bit miffed here.

 

Bought my corrado from a local guy that worked at a local garage for local people, "we'll have no trouble here", etc etc :lol:

 

our family have always used this garage and i've always thought they been good to me, to be fair they have at times, fitting me in asap or getting me out of a situation so i'm not stranded.

 

The corrado has always been serviced there since 1999 and they always stamped the book, so i carried on taking it there when i bought it. Mainly just to keep the stamps in book as proof of FSH.

 

this could be a long thread so i'll type in shorthand :lol:

 

-got car serviced a few weeks back

-its sat in garage since due to coolant probs

-took it apart, found air filter was old, no way has it got that dirty in about 300metres of driving at 15mph

-been charged for new filter, full service etc

 

i've not brought it up with them yet, but pretty angry i was taken for a mug, don't know how long thats been going on, nor do i know what else they haven't bothered to do when its gone in for service.

 

main question really is, do i bother to keep up the service history at such high mileage?, i could do it myself and i don't see me selling car anytime soon due to spending so much on it.

:shock: :shock: .....if they skimped on an airfilter (probably the cheapest and easiest of service jobs) I'd hate to know what else they didn't bother doing!

 

Tbh at this stage I'd say continuing the fsh is a bit of a false economy. It'll cost you more in servicing than it will add to the value of the car if it was sold. With a car of the Corrados age I think the current condition of the car is more important than paperwork from 10yrs ago!

 

I service all my cars myself, as I couldn't face forking over so much money to a garage for a couple of jobs that are pretty quick and easy. But I always keep the paperwork for the service parts bought and even file a few dated photos of the work being done for the cars folder of receipts.

I'd agree. If you're mechanically minded, why bother.

 

Properly document everything you do with your recepits for parts and put dates for oil changes etc.

If I was an interested buyer, the fact that an enthusiast owned car had been worked on (and documented) by an enthusiast wouldn't bother me that much as long as it all looked genuine.

 

For instance, there's no way in hell that I'd have an oil change done by a garage when I can buy synta for £2 a litre and a genuine filter for a tenner!

Well i'm decided now, just going to do it all myself.....best get a few tools i spose.

 

Now i'm all annoyed, i feel like buying a BMC and some HT Leads and plugs to cheer me up :lol:

i know, i really want one now :lol:

 

just spent a small fortune on car and realised its not going to be any different to drive :( i at least want one thing to of changed :)

Id not be happy about that mate, id be making a complaint and warning anyone you know against using them..

 

It is good to do the bits yourself, i do one service a year myself and the other is done at the dealers - seems a shame to break the history after 13 years nearly. I find aswell itll help you to get to know the car better so when things are running abit funny or go wrong you know what youve done and can diagnose / find faults easier..

 

BMC, do it.. Am i going to get to see this car at Stanford??

unfortunately i haven't made any plans for Stanford as i didn't know how long it would be off road for :( but now looks like i will have it back on road after tonight, as long as i've done everything properly :lol:

 

yeah, does seem a shame to break the history but i'm starting to think its not going to matter anymore, its done 160,000, i can see me owning it till at least 200,000 maybe more, and in that time am sure i'll have some big receipts for engine work which would probably deem the old service history a bit useless.

 

especially if they not actually doing anything each time i ask for a service :! which i really hope isn't the case.

Call trading standards, if they are ripping you off then they are probably ripping other people off too.

 

Not just a case of no new parts that you paid for they will have charged you labour for doing feck all as well.

 

FSH is not worth the paper its written on IMHO, I know of a guy on here who bought a FSH VR a while back and the brake fluid had been done every 2 years with the last change being 6 months before we did. Suffice to say it had not been done in a while and one of the nipples was seized.

A few years ago I thought I'd found the perfect car (VW but not a C). Owned by a wealthy retired couple from new, small badly worded advert in the local rag's classifieds, only 4 miles away, massive history file with all work done at supplying dealer and at a good price too. Needless to say, I was round there like a shot and bought it on the spot.

 

Got it home and went over it properly to find a massive list of items that had been regularly invoiced for that were bloody ancient and knackered: plugs, cap, arm, leads, coolant, filters, pads and discs etc. Best bit was the four sheared brake bleed nipples despite the invoice for brake fluid change only a couple of months before :shock: Bloody stupid really as the stealers could have made even more profit on four new calipers, hoses, fluid etc etc. Oh, hang on... that would have involved actually doing some work!

 

I took the box of broken old tat back to show the original owners how they'd been ripped off. They thanked me politely and showed me the door. They had bought their replacement car from the same place, were happy with the service " maybe you're mistaken, must have been a mistake, oh but they're so nice to us, they offer us a cup of tea..." and didn't want to rock the boat.

 

Thieving cnuts like that really boil my piss :mad2:

 

And no, FSH is often not worth the paper its printed on. A nice stack of invoices for decent quality bits is always good to see though.

My Rado was advertised as FSH and sure enough it has, done by VW dealers up til 2004, then by a Porsche specialists and then by my work. Also have a very large stack of reciepts with it.

Its been given a very good going over at work and all seems to be true, lost of new parts and seems very well looked after.

Will all this add to the value if I ever sell it?

My VR had full VWSH. but was abandoned in a car park with no oil, water, flat battery, sunroof half open and bonnet cable snapped. Needless to say the history didn't count in my opinion
