Relay 53 (VR6)

Recommended Posts

There's two of them! Not sure which one you need to replace but if they're not expensive, replace both. They're right next to eachother on the fuse board.

VW part no - 141 951 253B

Hella part no - 4RA003510-29

Before splashing the cash, lever the lids off them with a screwdriver and look for burnout coils and clean the carbon scoring off the two contacts inside.

Right I've just checked and cleaned all of my relays. One of the 53s had heavy carbon scoring/pitting and the 2nd one was fine. The worst relays were 167 and 21. 167 is a very heavy duty one and had major pitting and scoring. 21 was equally bad. I've cleaned them all up but the latter two will need replacing.

All the other relays were light duty and showed no signs of arcing.

Not sure what 167 and 21 do but might be worth checking them over.

bummer, I'm sure that the G60's includes a relay list, although it's been so long since I've been in mine, I could well be wrong... :?

Load reduction relay is your ignition relay... Basically it stops your ignition switch from taking the full load of all the ignition circuits... 8) Still doesn't stop the switch being pants though...

Hey everyone!

I am having problems with my sunroof at the moment and it seems to be

because of the relay not working.

It operates intermittently - there is nothing wrong with the

mechanism/guides nor the switch or motor but there is something wrong

with the relay.

When I unlock the car and turn the ignition - the sunroof switch may

be illuminated and will therefore work. However, ten secs after the

ignition is turned, the relay clicks for the central locking and

occasionally this knocks the illumination out on the sunroof! When

this happens the roof wont work.

When I turn the ignition off the doors should unlock. Sometimes they

dont. Are the roof and central locking relays linked and which ones

are they?

Thanks!

Nick

Nick, I think there is something more serious happening here. Your car should have a total closure system which throws the relays and monitors the sunroof switch states as well as the door lock pump state. When all have hit home (ie and confirm that they have in fact done what they were meant to do, and invert the signal), the alarm goes into the next state (ie beyond immobiliser) and actually arms the car, killing access to the switched (not permanent) 12 volt rail. If this state is not achieved before the countdown is completed (it depends on your alarm system) the alarm should sound to tell you that your car is still open!

Some further thoughts.

1. Turn on the ignition, open the sunroof, turn off the ignition and remove the key. Stay in the car, with the doors closed and then run the sunroof motor to close (using the switch on the interior light control panel). The sunroof should be allowed by the car to close completely even after the light has turned off. If it hasnt, I'd bank on the suggestion that your alarm system or total closure system is sensing the sunroof off the wrong circuit! Has anybody repaired a door, or taken out your fusebox around the time when this started happening? :?

2. Auto-opening when the ignition is turned off is actually a country level option and was not delivered in the UK. Where exactly is this car from? Without this information we cant trace how your circuits are meant to work.

If you have an alarm system I'd go straight to that and get the delay controls reviewed by the installer.

cheers for that!

well - the car is full UK spec but had an inhibitor wire cute by the installer (no idea which one) to enable the anti car jack feature after 10 secs of ignition.

This works fine. Only ocassionally will it not open the doors on turning off the ignition ( v strange)

When I say no illumination on the sunroof switch I mean that the green illumination on the switch itself is sometimes not present (especially when the roof relay does not click).

Just to let you know, all door skins and the roof lining were recently removed.

The alarm system is the Toad Ai606

Any more ideas?

thanks!

Nick

ps total closure will work with the roof but ONLY when the sunroof relay is clicking. Is the sunroof relay built in to the motor itself?

Nick I'm really astounded. Whoever fitted this thing needs his balls tapped. The alarm system is a piece of intelligent kit that can only take off on certain rails, specifically set aside by VW. It seems as though:

1. Instead of operating the cars' own total closure system and waiting for it to come back with a confirm, it has spliced into the door pump relay, and also directly into the roof motor relay. I'm sorry mate but I'd get the damn thing removed, speak to the distributors about how to plug it into the VW loom, and have it put back in, using the right piggy back points. There are specific take off points. Believe me, I've had too many problems with the ABS system and the EMS simply because the alarm system was in the circuit.

2. The sunroof has a stepper logic motor. That clicking sound a lot like it was removed and that precious clip dead centre of the front on the sun-roof rail has been removed and put back, back to front. Either way, I dont think theres much u can do unless you can get it in front of an old hand with Corrados. Try and turn up at the next Club meet, and I'll have a butchers for you.

Failing that, keep asking questions here. ...... :(

Hi mate

Its all sorted - Majik very kindly spent the evening with me sorting out the prob. The s/r motors contacts had all dried up. We fitted a motor from his second hand C and it has cured the problem perfectly.

Seems like dry solder on the circuit board or something.

Alarm has been fine for over a year and its all fine again. Was just the roof motor that died!

Cheers for the help! :)
