stoner 0 Posted December 5, 2003 The problem with my 16v idling too high continues, and seems to be getting worse! When I drive normally during the day, there is no problem, but as soon as the battery is loaded up, by putting the lights on, or the fan coming on, then the idle revs jump from 1000 to 1500 or more, sometimes up to 2000. Sometimes (not always), if I put on handbrake, then the revs drop to normal, and I can see a slight increase in the brightness of the headlights when I put on the handbrake too. When the fan comes on, I also get the coolant warning light coming on, even though the level is OK, the fan is working correctly. If the fan is on but the engine is cool enough for the warning light to go off, then I use the wipers, the warning light willl flash on and off in time with the wipers!!!!!!!! I am not making this up - has anyone got any ideas? The only thing I can think of is that the battery drain is too high, and the alternator is engine revs are rising to try and provide more juice via the alternator. Or would this be complete rubbish? My electrics aren't that good :?
bigben 0 Posted December 6, 2003 think you should get an exersism done on your car mate!! lol that is one weird problem the idle on mine was hight but that was to do with the timing been set wrong
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted December 6, 2003 Oh dear, you have some serious electrical gremlins there mate. Check for rats living in the engine bay and chewing on the wires. Seriously though, check the alternator is OK by putting a voltmeter across the battery with the engine running. Should read 13.8V or thereabouts. If that test is passed with flying colours, get yourself down to Halfords and buy a black battery lead (they're hanging up by the batteries) and attach it to one of the inlet manifold bolts and then the other end goes to battery negative. This always helped with my 16Vs. It provides an extra ground in case the default ones are corroded, which they usually are so you might also want to clean those up. This kind of thing is indicative also of a shagged diode pack in the alternator, so next week, I'd order a diode bridge from VW. It's a white plastic moulding with carbon contacts, about £13 IIRC. Try that little lot and report back to us with any developments. K
