iandavidcassidy 0 Posted December 7, 2003 I lifted the hood today when cold and noticed the coolant was below min. After driving for 30 mins the coolant was back to max!! why? should i top up with water soon or is this normal. Does this indicate a head gasket prob or something? DaveStorm 0 Posted December 7, 2003 According to the instruction manual, under the 'Checking Coolant Level' section it says "the coolant level must be between the MIN and MAX marks on the expansion tank when engine is cold and can be slighty above the MAX mark when it is warm". But if you are in any doubt it may be worth getting it checked out anyway. Hope that's of some help to you mate. 8)
iandavidcassidy 0 Posted December 8, 2003 cheers. still quite weird though. should i top it up with water? can it escape naturally or just when there are problems?
PhatVR6 0 Posted December 8, 2003 that's why it's called an "expansion" tank......
iandavidcassidy 0 Posted December 8, 2003 okay - i can work that out.. just want to know if its okay to "top" it up with water. and if corrados naturally use a BIT of water?
vr6corrado 0 Posted December 8, 2003 If you top up just with water remember you're reducing the antifreeze concentration, so i would add a touch of antifreeze too, especially in this weather.
dan 0 Posted December 8, 2003 Hi m8, Corrado's are not supposed to use water ... the coolant should not need topping up. It could be a head gasket problem or it may just be air locked. Has anyone been working on the coolant system latley?
dr_mat 0 Posted December 8, 2003 Before you panic about the head gasket, assume it's a hose starting to go, or the radiator, or the heater matrix, or something like that. Water levels dropping slightly is usually the first sign of stuff like that.. Head gasket should be the last thing you assume..!! Unless you're into large repair bills, that is! ;)
Supercharged 2 Posted December 8, 2003 Yeah, top it too minimum when cold and start the car and wait for it to get up to temp whilst monitoring the water level.... whilst your there check all the hoses and the rad for any signs of a leak - the coolant will leave a white powdery residue
