Stick a close ratio 6 speed gearbox and ATB diff on the VR6 and then see who wins....oh, I already have, it leaves CTR's for dead.

Also, do I need to point out that the CTR is possibly one of the ugliest cars ever made? one parks next to my corrado almost every day, when I'm sat in my corrado, my eyes are level with the tops of the doors on the CTR!! utter ming.

Yeah the CTR is no looker. But neither is the Evo 5/6/7/8/~ or Subaru but it's not about looks with these cars, it's about what they can do. With a Corrado VR6 (and one of your 6 speed recipes thrown in for good measure), you get the looks to go with the performance.

So - looks aside, the general consensus is that performance wise (as standard) they are evenly matched but the CTR is an ugly sod and the C is a timeless piece of design ;)

I do like the fact that Autocar got better, albeit marginal, performance from the C - therefore still all these years on - THE BEST ALLROUNDER 8)

The Words of EVO magazine:

HONDA civic Type R: 0-60 6.8

+ Potent and great value

- Chasis lacks sparkle

4/5 stars

VW Corrado 2.9 VR6: 0-60 6.2

+Still to be bettered for all round ability and appeal

- Err......

5/5 stars

Put it this way...

I could afford the CTR no problem, and I could have afforded to change it for a 172, Cupra or RS.

BUT I BOUGHT A 7 YEAR OLD VR6!!!

Sums it all up really...! :D

I am such a git I thought I would ask the editor of EVO - you will all no doubt be chuffed by the response :D

Dear Nick

Given the choice of a well maintained, very tidy Corrado and a new Civic

Type-R I'd take the VW every time.

The CTR isn't bad but it looks like hatchback that swallowed a shed, its

engine is rather on/off, and its handling lacks detail feel and feedback.

Sure, it's grippy and it's quick if you're prepared to rev the nuts off

it, and, yes, it probably is quicker in a straight line and around a

track, marginally, but so what? The Corrado is a much more rounded

driver's car. It's effortlessly real-world quick thanks to its torquey,

characterful V6, and has neat and beautifully poised handling (helped by

its low-slung build). It also rides comfortably, seats four and swallows

their luggage and is so much better-looking than the Honda.

Has he actually driven a Corrado VR6? I doubt it. Don't let him drive

yours. And don't bother driving his CTR - it'll be hard to be polite if

you're used to the understated brilliance of the Corrado, and I imagine

you'd like to stay on good terms with him.

Yours
