288mm Brake Caliper Rebuilding

Can the other hoses be used (its a 6 line kit I believe) also? I dont want to pay £100 for effectively 2 front hoses...I take it you cant buy them seperately?

Incidently, are the brembo discs zinc plated? I hate my discs in that only the disc surface is nice and clean, the vents etc are all rusted up - the rears are even worse and looks awful :(

 

ATE discs are zinc coated.

if you have 288mm calipers from a golf, you need the goodridge set for a late golf vr6 1995> i think if you buy the whole 6 line kit you can use all the hoses on a corrado providing you have standard rear calipers

Think you could paint them with VHT paint when new, and see what happens...

iirc black diamond discs wont go rusty either.

 

good thread, this is exactly what i was planning to do aswel, cheeers

 

how difficult is rebuilding the rear calipers?, as im going to rebuild all 4 second hand ones at the same time.

I believe EBC Discs are Zinc Plated + Colour Passivated - It gives an irridescent type finish to them plus obviously some corrosion protection.

Just had a pair of these calipers delivered today, won on ebay - they are so heavy compared to the standard 280's :o

 

Will degrease first then sandblast, new seals then paint and fit. Will probably go with Black Diamond grooved discs - anyone using these and what pads would you recommend with them?

I have done all this to a set of 288mms, fitted them bled the system but stil la bit spongy, may have to bleed again. My question is, where do does the anti squeal shim go, its about the size of a brake pad thin plat piece of metal, does it go on the outer or inner brake pad? I am not too sure

I am in the process of getting my carriers/calipers blasted then painted, but I have a couple of questions I hope you can answer.

 

Do the VAG pads come with those wire clips? as I do not have those.

 

Can I use them on Black Diamond combi brakes, and are these going to be more noisey than my standard discs?

Just wanted to show off my refurbed calipers & carriers, they've been shot blasted and have come up way better than I thought! Check out how bad the caliper is that hasn't been done yet.

wow, they are like new.

 

i should be getting a sandblaster setup when i start work on the land rover.

 

took me hours to clean up my calipers with a dremel :lol:

Yes. :D

 

The sandblasting really clears the gunk out, but it completely ruined the threads on the callipers too, so you'll most likely have to retap them. that's what i found anyway.

Firstly let me apologise, i know im gonna sound like a complete numpy..but i am in the middle of re-furbing my 288s and came across this thread..i have almost everything in the pics apart from the circled...are these the pistons? do the standard vr6 ones not fit? and do they go in whole circled in the second pic? there is nothing in said hole except a seal on the ones i have (i think)...sorry again for my ignorance.

i have been informed that the pistons are not solid..so maybe they are in there...all the seals are still in place so hopefully they are..they just look solid in the pic above...unless theyre not the pistons in that pic!! god im so confused!

The pistons are U shaped in section, so you only see the thin annular edge when they are in the caliper. If the dust seal is there and is fixed to something on its inner circumference, so is the piston. You should see the edge of the piston, like looking end-on to a thick walled pipe, inside the dust seal bellows.

 

Apply gentle air pressure to the hydraulic connection; the piston will move outwards.

yes the pistons are hollow, i think its just the pics i took are a trick of the eye, and i painted the inside of piston black so it might look solid.

 

in the first pic the pistons are positioned with the open face down

 

if you had the dust cover seal in place on the caliper but no piston the rubber cover would be flapping around and it would be obvious something was missing

thanks Roger and 3corsameal...the pistons are there...now i have actually had a look i am sure (well the ruber seal isnt going anywhere put it that way), but when i saw the pic of the piston of out the caliper it looked solid hence my concerns..the only things i think i am missing are a few of the rubber dust cap things...

Right, my front suspension is nearly done, all I need now is some discs and pads.

 

My 288mm brakes are from a golf, the black diamond ones in the link below are the ones I will probably order, are these the correct ones and do you think they will work ok with standard pads?
