Corrado ABS System

I have a Corrado G60 and I am not sure if the ABS system is working properly. I had to brake hard the other day and the wheels locked up, plenty tyre smoke as well!

 

The car does the nornal thing when it starts the ABS light comes on then goes off again. Can anyone help me out with this?

I would say it's not working properly if the wheels locked up, but then why would the light go out?

 

perhaps the ABS is working fine and either you stamped on the pedal giving the ABS no choice or your tyres are getting quite bald.

I should get it hooked up to Vagcom, most VW specialists or big garages have it, you can then pull up the fault codes.

I have tried reading the diagnostics with a U281 VW AUDI MEMO SCAN reader. This works fine on the latest Golf and Polo and a MK2 Golf but sadly all I got on the Corrado was "link error"

Check all the ABS related fuses and relays then try again? On a VR6 some are up behind the glove box.

 

 

Also before you start the car put your foot on the brake. Now turn the ignition - ABS light will come on, you should feel a pulse through the pedal and the light should go out.

 

If the light doesn't come on someone may have disconnected it to get the car through an MOT - check the connection.

 

If you don't feel a pulse on the pedal then something is amiss with the pump or ecu.

 

As said, a fault code scan (using vag com or simialr) should bring it up providing the ECU (in the passenger footwell behind the left panel) has power.

 

Sometimes the ECU can get wet / bad connections so check them too.

Just to close off the issue, this all fixed now. The fault was the ABS ECU. When opened there was water damage (when I got the car the passenger footwell was soaked).

 

If you look at the picture you can see where the circuit board has shorted out against the case.

 

 

The strange thing about this is the ABS self check worked fine (the light came on/went off) :cuckoo:
