max 0 Posted December 16, 2008 can anyone tell me what i will need to change my 16v front brakes to a 280mm [G60] set up. i know i will need 280mm 4 stud discs and probably G60 calipers as well. but am i going to need different CARRIERS for the calipers [e.g. G60 ones] to clear the extra 26mm of disc diameter. also are G60 calipers essential or could i use my 16v calipers with bigger carriers [i am on a budget here so i just want to cover all options] THANKS
Supercharged 2 Posted December 16, 2008 Ok, the calipers are the same but the G60 ones are wider as are the discs and pads... So you could keep your existing calipers for now and use the 280mm discs, calipers and 16v pads which you may need to sand slightly so they fit on the new discs
nocrap 0 Posted December 17, 2008 Yes you'll need G60 CARRIERS

Toad 0 Posted December 17, 2008 Ok, the calipers are the same but the G60 ones are wider as are the discs and pads... Eh? The calipers are of a similar construction, but the 16v ones don't give enough clearance without, as mr Supercharged says a bit of sanding. I'd go with a full G60/VR6 setup to keep things simple. The VR6 calipers and carriers are the same as G60 units.
Supercharged 2 Posted December 18, 2008 The best thing to do really is to buy new exchange G60 calipers from VW / GSF etc and give the old 16V ones back - they really won't notice the difference!

Toad 0 Posted December 19, 2008 Late Golf VR6s had 288mm brakes, corrado vr6s had 280mms, the same as the g60. Early golf VR6 and GTIs had 280mm disks brakes too.
flusted 0 Posted December 19, 2008 g60 discs are 2mm wider and the g60 caliper is 2mm wider to accomadate this. You can grind 2mm off the slider bolt heads and use your existing 16v calipers
