Anyone got any experience with refurbishing aluminium rims?

Recommended Posts

As the speedlines on my Corrado is a bit oxidised (not very much but some small areas), and the clearcoat/paint have loosened a few places, I was thinking of maybe refurbish them myselfe. Any of you guys have any info on what steps I should take, and maybe also what paint/color-code they original color is?.

Any info appreciated...:)

What I was thinking:

Give them a good coating with paint stripper, and clean them thorougly.

Sand them down with some dry paper, and then some wet-paper sanding.

Put on some primer.

Paint it with correct color.

Clear coat.....

Would this be "correct" way to do it or ???

yes and no.............

i have done several sets of wheels like this until recently...

i have been shown a differnet way and it saves time and gives the same result..

if you have access to a DA (orb sander) then just buzz out the bad bits on the wheels scotch (key them up)the rest of the wheels by hand in between the spokes etc

then wipe down with thinners to get them clean and get rid of any grease you may have left behind..

mask upo areas you want to then prime let dry , then paint, while still tacky ish then laquer

obviously before you do all of this the wheels have been cleaned....
