chrishill 0 Posted December 23, 2003 I've started to notice some rattly type noises when i cold start my C, and looking at the CCGB site it says noisy tappets can be an expensive repair! it seems to queit down after a bit, maybe i'm just paranoid! what other symptoms would i find with this sort of problem and is it really that expensive a repair job? Henny 0 Posted December 23, 2003 Tappets on a 16V aren't that bad, except you do have to buy 16 of the little sods... :? Euro list 'em at £6.50 each... £104 per set... While you're in there, change the cam drive chain as well and the cam belt + tensioner.... 8) The worst bit of the job's the labour as you've got to take the inlet manifold off, both cams out (hence may as well do cam belt + chain while you're at it)... It's not a massively difficult job, just time consuming... :? What oil are you using in it? It may be worth sticking in a change of a slightly thicker oil...
chuck 0 Posted December 23, 2003 The noise on cold starting isn't a problem by the way. Only if they are still noisy after a couple of minutes. They rely on oil pressure building up inside them to take up the slack on the cam (as opposed to the old type where you would have to shim them as they wore down). All the noise indicates is that they are becoming slower to build up pressure. As henny says its a time consuming job, so I would say its best to leave it until one dies and makes that cold starting racket all the time. Most valvers have rattly tappets for a couple of minutes when cold.

Jim 2 Posted December 23, 2003 Just in case you are considering taking your car into a garage to get a new set of tappets sorted, I had em done on my 2.0 16v.. they cost about £230, and that included getting the various timing and power steering belts all replaced as well. Not an eye wateringly bad price. As Henny said, a thicker oil does help. As a temporary measure, before getting em done, I went from using VW Synta to Castrol GTX 15w/40 and it did quieten it down a noticable amount.
