odd hunting prob

Recommended Posts

Hi all, newbie here, ive searched for relative posts, and havent found anything describing my symptoms. So here goes.

with the car stopped, and in neutral, if i press the accel pedal right down, it'll rev up no problem. however, if i try to hold the revs at around 2000rpm, it starts to hunt between 1000/1800rpm.

With normal driving, there seems to be a huge delay between me putting my foot down and the car responding, and it sort of lurches before speeding up.(in any gear.)

Also, say im driving at about 5000rpm, and press the clutch,it takes alot longer for the revs to drop than it used to.

I apologise if this has come up before, and would appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

cheers

That really sounds like an ISV (Idle Stabiliation Valve) problem... I had a 1.8 16V (KR) engine in my first 'rado (and in my MKI golf, but that's a different story! ) and that would cause this kind of problem.... Have a search for ISV, there's loads of posts on here (it's a common problem  ) and see if that sorts it out...

OR:

You could have a sticky throttle cable... :? That would give the weird idle problems, but probably wouldn't cause the acceleration hesitation that you describe, unless it's REALLY sticky... :?

Either way, that should give you something to go on... The KR (1.8 16V) engine is a rock and shouldn't give you any hassles if you treat it right...

Welcome to the forum by the way... Get ready to learn more than you probably ever wanted to!  8)

Agreed, ilde stabilisation valve. Stupid things provide anything but a 'stable' idle when they throw a tantrum!

Hmmm, interesting, i think ive now read all threads relating to the ISV, and it sounds like thats my problem. the one thing i havent found out is where to find it. I think i read its under the inlet manifold on the vr6? is it in the same place on mine?

(i dont know much, but am willing to learn)

What! at last someone else has the exact same symptoms. Idle valve, great, my mpg goes down to 25 from 30, VW charged 340 (216 in the end, after I threw my toys onto their showroom floor), quid to replace it, and the f***kers didn't solve the problem! In the end they diagnosed wet plugs and new HT lead, 135 quid. C in tomorrow morning. Then onto A38 for bomb run. I recommend you check the basics before heading into VW diagnostics
