Gearbox juddering when under load

Help! my workhorse car (89 passat 1.8) is making a juddering noise when under any kind of load, also when jacking the front wheels off the ground there is no resistance at all when spinning the nearside wheel, just like I am spinning a rear wheel! (it doesn`t try to turn the opposing wheel) does this sound like a diff problem? car has 190k on it. It has a cable change box which externally looks like my g60 box.

Behind each drive flange is a chunky spring and these springs press onto brass cones, which subsequently press onto something else, can't remember what, but combined, these components act as a very mild & partial diff lock. As the Tom Jones says, it's not unusual.....for these brass cones to wear down with age or break completely through over lowering, that would explain the complete lack of resistance when spinning a wheel, but it should not affect the drive under load, unless perhaps your diff bearings are so shagged, the whole planet gear assembly is jumping up and down when you give it some revs.......just a few thoughts....but I'm probably wildly off the mark!

 

I did have to have those cones replaced on my Black MK2 16V (remember that?) though, which Stealth kindly replaced for me and it drove like a different car afterwards.

This fault with my passat happened all of a sudden, but we have been carrying a lot of weight in it recently, guess i`ll have to get a second hand box from somewhere :cry:

Yeah that would be the best option.....not worth rebuilding to be honest as you can get a VW box for as little as £50!

ive got one coulds be yours for a 100 notes its out of a 16v but as far as im aware they are all the same(waitin for someone to correct me) pm me if your interested
