Temperature Gauge

Recommended Posts

I have tryed searching the forum for info on this but i can't find anything on it :confused4:

my temp gauge in my car (1993 VR6) has started to act very strangley just wondering if you could maybe give me some advice..... Right i have changed my thermostat and houseing and the 3 thermoswitchs on the side of the houseing but something isnt quite right while driveing along the gauge will sit at 90c as it should but all of a sudden it rockets up over a 115c and the light starts flashing and iam panicking like feck thinking my rad is going to blow up ill turn the car off and it will sit at 90c again then rocket up again. The fans come on and at the right temp etc i have no idea what could be causeing this, sorry for rambleing on any advice is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Hmmm - do you turn it straight on and off again and it's back at 90?

If so then maybe a wiring fault - look for brittle wires from the sensors and also check the pins inside the plugs look ok.

What about just sitting on the driveway - does it appear to warm up ok and the fans kick in at the right times? - this is a good test for the fans as your getting no airflow thru the front.

header tank sender seemed to be the cause of this on mine, no idea why, but it seems cured with a new tank on.

yeah yesterday i was driveing along was at 90c then suddnenley rocketed up to way over 110c stoped turned of the car switched it back on straight away gauge back down to 90c driveing along again for a couple of miles it suddnley done it again so i continued to drive, after a couple of mins it droped back down to 90c or there abouts. I got home and let it idle and the fans were comeing on at at the right temps etc,

anyone got any ideas?

New header tank?

cheers

Well bang goes that theory! On the way home tonight after 10 mins driving the temp gauge went flying to the top and the LED flashed permanently, did this all the way home.

Removed header tank wiring, swapped temp sender connections around and nothing made any difference, just carried on flashing, although disconnecting the temp sender did make te gauge shut down, plugged back in it resumed it's misbehaving. All the time the car was running perfectly, oil temp spot on and the fan cutting in and out just fine idling on the drive.

Switched the ignition off and back on and everything settled fine  time to try a new temp gauge I think, nothing else on the instrument pod is misbehaving.

Its the exact same thing as mine, it will sit idle fine fans come on etc the oil temp will be spot on, it has now started rocketing straingt up even though it is cold :brickwall: iam going to try a new header tank

How much do u reckon for a new temp gauge?

certainly on the old dash 12 gallon/55Litre the temperature gauge/fuel gauge module can be removed separately and is identical to all the passat dashes of that era, I have a passat dash to cannabalise. I'd imagine it's the same for the later dash.

Yes, it is, just checked on ETKA, both use PN 357919045M

hi dave

i have just ordered my new header tank could this solve the problem?

I tryed disconecting the 4 pin yellow switch i thought that would stop the gauge going up but it still did :confused4:

while the switch is connected the gauge will still rocket up even if the engine is cold :confused4:

any ideas?

cheers

i had a similar problem with my oil temp - it used to fly up to 120C. Rewired the spade, changed the sensor no change. You know what it turned out to be? The clocks themselves were (are) faulty. The problem is an electronic one and i dont know how to solve it, although now it seems ok-ish, only goes up to about 104C. So it *may* just be a dry joint or some weak solder somewhere. Get the clocks out and have a look, or better still, try another set like i did to rule them out.

Is it easy to get the clocks out mate?

I have my new header tank comeing on friday. Don't know if this will help

Its really strange it will rocket up even if the car has been sat overnight, my oil temps are spot on it never goes above 102c and the fans come on when they should (i think), if i leave it to idle the gauge will drop then it will go back up the light will flash then it won't, iam not looseing any coolant haven't had to top it up for months :confused4: :confused4:

Could it be the water pump?

not difficult to remove the clocks:

remove the 2 screws at the top of the shroud and the two in front

remove the shroud

using a long screwdriver remove the two phillips scres holding the clocks in place on the 'ears' at the top of the sides of the clocks

move the steering wheel down to its lowest position

tilt the clocks from teh top downwards - you will see it piviots on the bottom.

carefully lift it towards you - push the left side slightly in and the right slightly out.

Remove the connector at the back of the loom by pressing the two clips on the top & bottom of the connector

remove the clocks! job done.

thanks mate much appreciated,

i hopeing the new header tank will do the trick but the next thing would be the clocks, thats my jobs for the weekend then.

16 year old electrics there bound to be a bit suspect at this stage off the cars life, Is it possible to just buy a new temp gauge or is it a whole new set off clocks i would need?

go back 5 posts :)

If it's brand new you want, then expect to pay stupid money, if they haven't discontinued them.

This will sound like a daft question :epicfail:

But...... Will that passast temp gauge fit into the VR6 clocks i know they are different from early valvers and G60s?

cheers

yep, what you need is the equivalent age passat clocks and then remove the temp gauge and fuel gauge module, this is the exact same part number as the Corrado one so simply use it to replace the module in your existing VR Corrado instrument cluster.

This afternoon mine slowly went up then stayed at the top, as soon as you stop though and let it idle it drops slightly and the light stops 2 flash but as soon as you move even 1m it will go to the top and the light will flash again could this be something to do with the airflow or something?? :confused4: Its really racking my brains,

could it be the water pump??

What are the signs of a dodgy water pump?

£56.80 + VAT for a temp gauge and coolant gauge from the stealers.

cheers

Right changed the header tank yesterday but this done fu@k all, it still rises and the light still flashes grr!!

What would be the next thing to try?

A new temp gauge?

A new temp sensor? I have changed this recenetly (the 4 pin one) when i went to the staelers they said the yellow one was discontinued, and they gave me a blue 4 pin one instead is this correct?

Right i have now put in a new temperature gauge, the temp will now sit at 110c is this just because the blue sensor on the thermostat houseing is overreading the actual temp? i have heard this happens what would be the soloution? the fans come on as they should,

Yeah - I'd have changed the temperature sensor before changing the gauge in the clocks. Definitely worth doing that now :)
