Gaz154 0 Posted January 8, 2004 when i turn the key the engine turns over but just wont fire up and i can hear a clicking sound which i have been told is the fuel pump relay i've changed it already and it seemed to cure it for about 2 weeks but its doing it again. it seems to happen more when the fuel tank is nearly empty. to start it i have push it a wee bit jump in and try to bump start it in second i don't need to push it fast enough to start . just to let it turn over a wee bit then it will start with the key. i'm thinking its on of the fuel pumps i think there's 2 anyone got any ideas or how do i check the fuel pumps are working properly
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted January 8, 2004 It's not a good idea bumping a chain driven engine frequently as it can stretch the chain and throw out the cam timing a bit. The only way to check the pump is to hook a pressure guage into the fuel rail and see if it delivers 4 bar from idle to 6000 rpm on a rolling road. They tend to be noisy (constant drone easily audible in the car) when on the way out. Other things to check are a dodgy ignition switch, immobiliser and crank sensor. Henny 0 Posted January 8, 2004 sounds to me like you've got a rotten earth cable to your chassis/engine/gearbox... Check the thick cable that has the battery -ve terminal on it, it should go from the battery to the chassis by the battery tray and then on to the gearbox. If it is nasty looking at any point, then your starter (and all of your engine sensors!) aren't getting a decent earth, so starting will be difficult and you may find that you have some random running problems too... :? This is pointed out by the fact that it'll bump start easily, if it were a fuel pump, it'd be a swine to start at any time... 8)
Gaz154 0 Posted January 12, 2004 i can see the earth point under the battery but can't follow the lead very far do you know exactly where they go on the engine and gear box. the one under the battery looks a bit green does this mean its knacked any idea of a part number
Henny 0 Posted January 12, 2004 green = oxidised = high resistance = probably worth changing it! 8) Part number is: 357-971-235C for chassis upto 50-p-003-300 535-971-235B for later chassis numbers. I can't help you as to where your earth strap attaches to the gearbox as I've never had or worked on a VR so I don't know the answer... :? Sorry... 8)
