Bruceybaby's NUGGET! small update 23/1

Recommended Posts

Hello all, Not sureif i posted much about my last 'rado on here, but thought i'd maybe socialise a bit more! few of my mates are on here and rave about it!

Best give a bit of background i guess. I'm 22 and hail from edinburgh, My local club is the fantastic SVAG  and my introductory car to vag was my first ever C.

1989 16v in Tornado red

DSCF0161.jpg

I loved it loads but alas, it was telepathicaly liked to my bank balance and after a lot of cash spent, I ultimately had to let her go due to a rather unhealthy MOT fail. My mate nicked it for a bargain and is still pottering about today!

The money i COULD have spent on fixing the corrado, was instead spent on this

DSCF1165.jpg

VR6, which was poverty spec to begin with but ended up highline spec and RR'd ate at 188bhp!

RR28.jpg

I loved this car and swapped it for an A6 TDi, it changed hands a few times and recently, blew up after some little twerp loered the hell out it and burst the sump/Seized the engine :bad-words:

The A6:

a6.jpg

Which i hated and swiftly did a deal for this

2009-07-31_143312.jpg

Which i loved, but sadly, it stoppd me concentrating on the smal bumper mk2 i was rebuilding with an ABF,So i decided it had to go ad the funds would e ploughed into my C reg golf.

Then i seen a beautiful corrado for sale in the colour i always wanted :camp: .

With a chunk of cash considerably less thn he asking price, i decided to chance my luck!

These were the sale pictures

With a price agreed, I bit the bullet and commited, told him to buy tax and I arranged transport to Dumfries.

Bashed on down to Dumfries to see it. Its not as clean as it looks in the pictures and the gent had said the battery was dead, so I did the sensible thing and tried to get more off, but he wasn’t for having it. I was getting it for a steal so I cared not a jot and off I drove. Whacked in 30 quid and bashed on up the A74, as I got onto the A702 (Biggar road) it developed a misfire, as I trailed my mum, she phoned me and I told her “keep an eye on me. Its misfiring and might cut out”, Minutes later . . . .It cut out. The alarm light flicked on and there was no power. I put 2 and 2 together and figured the alternator mustn’t be charging. God bless Adrian Flux for providing Free breakdown insurance!

CorradoY.jpg

Got it home and the next day I had to sort out an alternator and a battery. £100 later and we were up and running.

Couple of pics with my old golf and after I polished it

At kents

All in all I’m pretty chuffed. With the hassle I’ve had with the 2 golfs, its nice to be back in a stable car. And one that my neighbours can’t complain about! Going through the receipts, its had thousands spent on it so I’m gonna hold onto this one, I’ve had too many cars in the past year and this ones a keeper.

I’m giving up on going fast, so I’ll leave the engine alone until it NEEDS attention.

The bodywork is really a priority so I’ll save up for sorting that out.

Both front wings are rusty.

The top of the windscreen is bubbling.

The bonnet is stonechipped

Someone has taken the door trims off, and ripped off the paint too, then touched it in so the passenger side needs attention,

The drivers rear quarter is dented and scratched

Paint has chipped off the panel below the tailgate

The paint above the drivers door on the main pillar is faded beyond repair as is the front bumper.

So really, with yellow being such a difficult colour. Its likely ill be saving up, circa £1000 to get a half decent respray. And if I do that, it’d be rude not to get a VR6 bonnet, later spec wings, Lights and front bumper so I can get flush indicators! That’ll take a while!

I don’t really like the D90’s, they’re just not my thing. So I’ll probably be replacing them with some TH Monos at some point.

That is all!

Thanks for reading

Thanks for the comments guys! Yeah my last c cost me a bit as well so I'm prepared for it, I learnt a lot on my mk2's and much of this is the same I guess, just worried about certain parts being scarce!

The final price was 1250, which in essence, to me anyway, is really 600 or so. I paid a grand for the vento and the mods I did to that were practically free as I was breaking a mk3 with highline spec and nicked the best bits. Having swapped cars about and getting cash in my favour, and then selling the mk2 I've faired rather well!

Of course it was £67 for a battery and £30 for an alternater from the word go! But you don't buy a 20 year old car without expecting to maintain it I guess, and after all, its not like I'm spending £300 a month for 5 years on a charcterless car!

the D90's are 8's out back, look to be 25mm adapters and 6 (I think) on the front with approx 20mm adapters. To be truthful, they're in pretty bad nick. The OSF has a huge chunk out the rim, well maybe not huge but a fair size. And there's a slight crack on the NSR. The NSF has a very slight flat spot on the back of the rim which isn't all that bad but enough to give a slight vibration at 70MPH. I'm just gonna blast some black over them and run them for the winter, then come up with somethin nice in the spring :)

Going to collect some goodies from Jenks tomorrow evening, and hopefully, when I get home, mr postman will have arrived with some shiny new equipment that shall diminish the gap between tyre and arch!

you do know that you can fit the later front fogs and indicators into the early bumper? Seems silly to replace a good bonnet, front wings and bumper to gain nothing more than a few millimetres of width in the arches and over the engine... :cuckoo:

Anywho, looks like you've got yourself a little cracker there... I've always been partial to a nugget, but my missus won't let me have one as she has a thing against yellow cars.. :help:

Didn't know that mate, thanks! the wings will still need replaced though. good to know about the bumper!I presumed the lights were the same but the retainers inside stuck out further if you catch my drift?

Ha, my missus didn't think she liked yellow cars either, till i bought one, now she wants one!

New Rado looks nice - not that many around in Yellow that I've seen. Have to give you a thumbs up on the other cars too! Have a friend in Biggar so if I'm ever up that way I'll keep my eyes peeled/sunglasses on? Good luck!

In actual fact the indicators sit in the frame/fogs (all one unit) and all you have to do is push/cut out the rubber at the back of the light aperture because the lights are deeper!

Simples 8)

You've lost me there mate

I happens to have another bumper im having a go at painting tomorrow, so if i can get my lights t sit correctly in the bumper, happy days. If not, i won't be too bothered, I forgot how refreshing it is to have a nice early spec'd rado.

I've been busy collecting parts, so early next weeks should see me and the C set up the way we want to be until next year when respray funds are all savd up!

Its not so much the colour match mate, (I've actually just tried a test patch of nugget and it seems fine) its more the complete morons that work there! Service is terrible, and the staff seem to be in their own little worlds!

For instance, yeserday, at 4pm iarrived at the parts counter to order 3 cans of Nugget yellow.

'whats the code sir?'

'Lk1B mate, Nugget Yellow off a 1990 VW Corrado'

The guy stood there in front of the screen for a good ten or so minutes. So i asked him;

'you having any luck mate?'

' nah . . . . Can't seem to find it closest i can get is VWLK1B but its not Nugget Yellow'

Now even i can see thatsnot the closest, thats the code. so i daid

'can i have a look please mate', He kindly obliges and alows me to see the screen. In plain writing it said.

VW LK1B Nugget gelb :cuckoo:

'Now i don't want to think outside the box mate, but maybe Gelb, is german for yellow, and that is in fct, the colour i require'

'oh yeah' says he. 'It might take me a while to mix this paint sir'

'what time do you finish?'

'6pm'

'what time is it now?'

'20 past 4'

'how long does it take t make up 1 tin'

'oh about 10 minutes'

:censored: :brickwall: :help: 'so you think you'll struggle to make 3 tins in an hour and 40 minutes?'

Long story short, i left him and he thought he should be able to just make it but they might be too busy, I could almost see the hay bale fly by as i left the near empty shop. He phoned me an hour later with a status report saying they were going to clean the store so couldn't make my paint today.

'sorry mate, did i miss something, did you say the 35 quids worth of paint i ordered and paid for in advance, won't be ready, because you have to clean the store?'

'its no my faut mate, just what ive been told, I've made one tin'

'look mate, i want this paint tonight, you've got 40 minutes surely, thats enough time?'

'we need to clean the store'

'look mate can i speak to your superviser? I appreciate its not your fault so gimme the guy thats making you clean the store'

anyhow, i get the uperviser on the phone and he tells me the customer comes first and all but they're really busy so theres no way they can do it tonight but it'll definately be ready first thing tomorrow morning.

Well i was working today, so decided to get that out the way, then drop by and pick up the paint. 13:30pm. In i go to get my paint.

 Hiya, 3 tins of paint reserved for me, bruce kerr. In walks yesterdays monstrosity of n employee and starts chuckling away to himself and i can see him whispering in someones ear, 'did you make up that paint'.

the answer was of course, a resounding no!

I have NEVER bit my tongue so hard! :brickwall: :brickwall: :brickwall: :brickwall: :brickwall:

well, at least i've vented my frustrations on here!

 Typical Halford's excellent customer service there mate!!

I went in recently to buy an ex-display head unit they had stopped selling, it was £199 when they sold it. I could get it for £170-190ish online, but thought "Hey, ex-display, get it for a bargain!"

"Hi mate, I reserved this headunit last week for when u take it off the display?"

"Yep no problem, let me get it for u......This the one?"

*starts packing it together for me*

"Before u sort it all out mate, how much is it gonna cost me then?"

"Ummm...(scans it) £249 sir"

"Hang on, you're gonna sell me an effectively SECOND HAND headunit, for £50 MORE than you sold it 1st hand last week??"

"That's what the system says..."

 Needless to say I didn't go ahead with the transaction

Nice set of cars u've had their mate, love Jetta's :luvlove: and that red mk2 u bought looks special! But of course, the nugget 'rado is lookin' schweeeet!

Look forward to seeing more pix as u get the paintwork sorted and "touch her up" so to speak...

Nice car and interesting reading, I would love to own a Nugget G60 if i could find a relatively unmolested one

tis a great colour and looks a perfect platform to start from

Cheers ri tin, yeh a g60 would be cool, tbh though, if I do anything to the engine, it'll probably just be a quick abf swap. However, if a vr came up at a decent enough price, it'd be rude not to.

Just a wee update, Done this on Monday night with the anticipation of fitting everything else i have on the Tue/Wed, but i need a better 22mm for my top mounts so i'll do it all in one go wen i get that. Popped down to Kent's an started doing this

Then keyed the surface

The goodies should be on before the meet tomorrow mate, weather dependant!

So, I fitted my front Coilovers last week with the aid of mynew buzz gun :) and when it came to doing the rears, the 17mm bolts were uber tight. One loosened off with some gentle persuasion, and the other jut rounded.

Rather than mess about on the ground for hours on end. I gave up. its always the easiest way :rthumb: So i popped round to my mates garage where a little bit of heat did the trick.

2009-10-26155046-1.jpg

Oh and guess what else was there!

2009-10-26151228.jpg

Noice, Took her home and then left it for days on end doing nothing. Got my finger out yesterday and . . . . . Voila:

2009-10-28162222.jpg

2009-10-29133703.jpg

2009-10-29133710.jpg

2009-10-29133717.jpg

2009-10-29133727.jpg

2009-10-29133745.jpg

The fronts have 20mm left on the thread, and the rears have no thread left.

Unfortunately, this presented an issue of the coilovers rubbing against the wheel. So I put on some shiny spacers ,measuring 3mm a side, which certainly make it just driveable, but alas, I shall have to bite the bullet and raise it a little, maybe 20mm on the thread, and then see how we stand. If its still catching ill order some 5mm and space them 8mm either side maybe. Not sure how that’ll play because at the moment, the wheels catch the arch lip when it bounces around. I guess I’ll have to be sensible.

I have some other wee bits and bobs I’m treying to get on tonight so its ready for tomorrows Urban meet, because I’m working tomorrow! Fingers crossed the missus lets me out to play! And the weather dries up a bit!!!!!

Thoughts everyone?

Love nuggets (Corrado's & chicken  ), love lowered, love the wheels.

Just not quite understanding the reflector on the door panel? :confused4:

Personal taste maybe, but Id go for some smoked indicators and do something with the rears :D

Ps. That's awesome having a mate with a garage!!
