Rossco 0 Posted January 19, 2004 Not long after i bought my rad the water pump pulley started chattering away, i didnt bother changin it for a while cos i was quite poor, 2 weeks ago i got a new one from the stealers(£40) and bunged it on, fired the car up and it sounded sweet as a nut. But now its gone back to chattering again surely i couldnt have buggered another pulley? Just wondering if anyone has had these issues before? The actual pulley i replaced was the inner "helper" puller, the one that the alternator belt runs on not the actual drive pulley itself. Its a 1.8 !6v by the way Cheers guys Rossco

Henny 0 Posted January 19, 2004 There's an idler pulley on the KR engine that freewheels over one of the other pulleys for the waterpump. This has an anti-friction coating on it which breaks down over time. I've had to change the one on my original Corrado as it did exactly as you describe. I recently sold the pulley (I wrote the car off about 3 weeks after fitting it! ) to Bally (I think it was anyway!) who was having exactly the same problems. The pulley is still available from VW but is about £70 IIRC... I'll get the part number for you when I get home tonight. It's not a difficult job to change it, it just hurts the wallet a bit! :? Yeh thats the one i changed, it doesnt drive anything it just freewheels, but wot im getting at is the fact the brand new one has been on the car a week and its chattering already, just wondering if i had put it on wrong or slipped up in some way? Kevin Bacon 5 Posted January 19, 2004 Blimey, those pulleys were £120+VAT when I needed one :x They are very fragile and have to be pushed onto the pump spindle by the middle section only. If you push on the outer pulley too hard it will weaken it or break it completely. It also needs to go on the spindle dead square, so you may need to sand the spindle down a bit. If it's knackered already, take it back to VW and get it replaced. K
Henny 0 Posted January 19, 2004 Could it be that your waterpump has become noisy too? Just a thought.... If you're sure it's the pulley, I'd have a stern word with VAG about it 'cos that's just silly lasting only a week! :?
