pebisit 0 Posted January 31, 2010 Just a bit of info, car runs perfectly, its only when I let the clutch out that I get the horrible crunching noise and no forward motion Cheers
Rob_G60 0 Posted January 31, 2010 Had this happen to me last week turned out to be the p/s drive shaft, jack the car up put it in gear and see if you can turn the wheel, well I think that's how you check
pebisit 0 Posted January 31, 2010 'Turn the wheel', do you mean actual wheel rather than steering
Rob_G60 0 Posted January 31, 2010 The wheel not the steering wheel
pebisit 0 Posted January 31, 2010 Well, jacked it up and both wheels turn when in gear, confused.com :D :D Diff seems to sort of work, opposite wheel turns the other way, but not straight away, but it is making a clunking noise when doing so Any other ideas?? Thanks
carrots 1 Posted January 31, 2010 sounds like gearbox to me
pebisit 0 Posted January 31, 2010 But it goes into gear no poblem, its only when you feed the clutch out, you get no motion and a horrible clonking noise Surely if it was the gearbox, you wouldnt be able to sleect he gears easily as you can
carrots 1 Posted January 31, 2010 i had a mk2 escort that done the same thing, that was the gear box.think it was the input shaft
pebisit 0 Posted January 31, 2010 Nightmare, lets hope its not!! Cant understand if it goes into gear fine, why it could be a gearbox issue. Drive shaft, yes, diff, yes, but gearbox, didnt think of that

pebisit 0 Posted January 31, 2010 jacked up one wheel, wheel turned in gear tried the oher, same thing worried now, both wheels should be locked, surely when in gear
Rob_G60 0 Posted January 31, 2010 if it turn when its in gear then its more likely to be the driveshaft
neo3670 0 Posted May 3, 2010 Hi pebisit, Did you manage to sort out the problem? My vr6 has just done exactly the same thing!! 190k on the clock, noticed over last couple of weeks that when driving had a new whirring noise, then last night drove up the road just changed gear and "Clunk!!". Exactly same as yours. Was it the gearbox or driveshaft? Would appreciate any input.
neo3670 0 Posted May 3, 2010 Never mind, Had a look tonite, turned out the drivers side drive shaft managed to undo itself from the gearbox! Managed to reconnect it and its all ok again! Phew, no new gearbox for now then. Hope yours was as simple.
