The VR6 Revolution In 1992 two new engines were introduced: a 2.0 L 16 valve (100 kW/136 bhp) and the VR6, a revolutionary design combining V-shaped straight Reihen engine achieved by two cylinder banks with an angle of 15 degrees and a single cylinder head. The design allowed 6 cylinders to be packed smoothly and for smooth of operation - similar to an inline 6 cylinder. The VR6 engine is regarded by engineering specialists as an absolute masterpiece and as a result successors to the VR6 are still used today by Porsche and Bugatti. The Corrado VR6 was in fact, so good, that many commentators at the time said it was worthy of a Porsche badge. The Corrado VR6 produced for the European market had a volume of 2.9 L and 190 bhp. Many reviewers believe it is one of the best handling front wheel drive sports vehicles of the eighties and nineties offering a luxuriant driving experience and amazing value for money if not the looks to match some other models on the market. The innovative 15-degree V6 engine also won Popular Sciences Best of Whats New Award for 1992. Car magazine voted it as one of 25 Cars You Must Drive Before You Die. Kevin Bacon 5 Posted March 26, 2010 Great little write up! IMO the Corrado is one of the best handling cars ever, not just "for a FWD" car. I hate that "for a FWD car" phrase as it implies it's the poor relation to the motor car and has no right to handle well. A car is a car, no matter what wheels are driven and if it handles well, it handles well, simple as that :D BMWs for example, by that definition, should p1ss all over most cars, just because they're RWD, but most of the ones I've driven and owned handle terribly, imo. M spec cars excluded obviously, but they're just race cars with a posh suit on top. Focus RSs and Integra Type Rs have no trouble keeping with and / or beating RWD and 4WD cars round a track, so it's about time this old fashioned "for a FWD car" notion was killed off! :D Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
