1.8 16v Tappet adjustment

Recommended Posts

Newbie question so forgive me if it is a stupid one please.

Have chanced into Corrado ownership so not fully up to speed with it all yet.

I have a 1.8 16v. Its a 1990. It has vw service stamps up to 120000 and has now done 145k.

The engine pulls very well and starts, ticks over, revs very well. No smoke popping or banging so all good.

However it does make quite a loud tappet type noise at tickover that kinda comes and goes but is mostly there, hot or cold.

Can I adjust the tappets on this engine and if so can anyone point me to some instructions?

And if not adjustable what options do I have?

Thanks

Jon

What oil are you using? - might be too thin

A common trick is to add 1/2 a litre of ATF fluid to the engine for a couple on hundred miles before an Oil change, this seems to act like a flush

It's reasonably covered in the Haynes manual for Golf and Jetta 84 to 92.

It's very common to have noisey tappets in krs, what's your oil level lookin like? if you do replace them soak the new ones in oil for a day or two to fill them up, otherwise there loud as fuck for a few hundred miles,

Not a difficult job, but make sure you get the thing timed back up properly, as you will be removing the cams from the head, to do the tappets.
