Bobby 0 Posted January 30, 2004 After spaying my door using pearl dragon green (sorry its a mk4 polo soon to be sold to buy a corrado) i realised that the paint match i was given was shoddy, it lacked any bluey pearl and was significantly darker, i have flatted the laquer down and buff the door which very slighty lightened the colour. i don't think the door would have needed a base coat as it was already metallic green underneath but i primered over this any way as it was too dark. Any painters out there no what the problem is a rubbish paint match or a lack of blue basecoat. I sprayed my 16v bumpers in the same colour but from a different batch and the match is perfect and they were never basecoated just straight primered first. One last thing any ideas on paint prices from vw for say a litre of pearl. any help would much appreciated B.
steveo29 0 Posted January 30, 2004 maybe they didnt mix it properly...as a rule most mettalics need blending....that is spray the door completly ,and belnd basecoat into the ajoining panles then laquer the whole lot...obviously the match needs to be somewhere near or it would still stand out
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted January 30, 2004 Did you use the right colour primer? VW usually use white but some body shops use grey, which affects the overall colour....if not that then as Steve said, they didn't blend the basecoat accurately enough. As for prices of paint by the litre, it varies from £50 to £200 per litre depending on the complexity of the mix. I know someone that paid £500 per litre for a one-off Candy Apple blue blend from the states..... paint isn't cheap stuff! Try a local auto paint specialist, mine use Standox or Glasurit paints which are very robust and they're matches are spot on. K
