Could a clicking gearbox be a reason of MOT failure ??

Recommended Posts

I had a cv joint pointed on my mot test and replaced it but there is still clicking. Its only on first gear so must be a gearbox. Could clicking gearbox be a reason of MOT failure ??

What I herd is that condition of Your engine and gearbox is not considered on MOT. Does anybody now the answer ?? I will be checking everything again on Monday because maybe I did something wrong but don't think so. I've booked my MOT on Wednesday and don't want to go there and find out that my VR6 will fail it again :(

I have a plan to replace this gearbox but not now.

not sure if it is the same thing but the gearbox on mine clicks in 1st too, really horrible sound and makes me wince every time. I took it to a transmission specialist a while ago who said it's worse than it sounds and will last a while yet. IIRC, he said it was likely the layshaft bearing on it's way out. My car made it through the MOT last month with this noise - in fact it wasn't even mentioned as an advisory... :confused4:

An MOT only checks that the car is roadworthy, safe, etc

The gearbox, clutch, and most of the engine parts aren't inspected so a clicking gearbox wouldn't come up at all

Is it just a one off click that happens just after you have driven off, usaly after being stationary for a hour or so?

Jake, I get something similar to what u describe. For instance if it's the 1st time Im driving it that day, after 10 seconds down the road I get a 'crunch/clicking' noise from the undercarriage it seems...and as u describe if it's left for a while after and I get in it again it does the same again :confused4:

Sorry for the hi-jack, emu

meh, my 'ssat's been doing the "clunking in first when turning" thing since I got it nearly 4 years ago... and it's still going strong and hasn't failed an MOT because of that... 8)

I think I can feel it in the pedals too, but haven't driven it for a while so will try and remember to 'feel out for it'
