2nd gear selection issues after 1.8t conversion

The car has no 2nd gear at all, it just wont physically go into it, but it feel likes its not the box at all as its like it hiting a brick wall, i know it may be down to me simply needing to remove more material from hole where gear selector sits but we did find a little clip which we have no idea where it goes so woundering if it it could be off the linkage although i can get every other gear fine. Just woundering if anyone else has this issue or if it just an angle grinder back out jobby 8)
