Patch or respray?

Hi all,

 

Is rust treatment expensive? I have a few patches that are getting serious now even with attempts to slow it down :(

 

Does it make sense to do rust treatment with a full/partial respray or does it not affect cost that much?

 

Also does anyone have a list of part numbers for exterior seals that usually need replacing when doing a respray?

Whats rusting mate? Tbh, i'd get whatever needs paint taken down to bare metal then painted.

Got a big rust bubble on one arch, on the drivers sill and a couple of small bits on the door and boot.

 

I guess I can get these sorted first an worry about a respray later. Have you had this kind of stuff done? Am I looking at a lot of ££££?

about £100 per panel as a very rough guide but depends where it is on the arch if they can spot repair then laquer the edge out.

Cool that's not too bad. Now to find a bodyshop I can trust!

where abouts are you based?? i work for a bodyshop which specialises in classics, and restoration, we mainly do aston martins, vw's, and classic bmw's, and i am a raddo fan myself, i own 2 currently, lol.

 

however, you may well be a million miles away, and we could be unable to help :-(

 

As said above though, depending on where abouts in the panels the bits are, spot repairs/ blow ins might be possible, and would keep the price down to a minimum :-)

I'm in London so not too far away (where abouts is the bodyshop?). Booking some time off work in a couple of weeks so can pop down and show you what I need done!

I had similar issues with my car, there will be water ingress somewhere, so if your arch is bad, then somewhere connected with the inner arch or the cill is where the ingress is happening. If you get your car on a ramp or axel stands, give the underneath a poke and tap and see where your metal is soft. I had to cut out any old metal and replace with new, etch prime external paintwork and new underseal/bond seal the inner arches.

 

Then look at getting your paint work done. Otherwise, the rust will return and you will have to do it all again. I almost missed a few spots doing mine, I had to grind off all the underseal to the arches as they were being flared and when the arches were being hammered to flare them, it was then where I saw the weak points. If you take your time, in the obvious places by tapping the inner arches etc, you will find the spots. I had a section missing from the rear corner of the cill and water had just worked its was back and forth. Check also for any damage under neath the car, signs of splits the underseal and get them all nicely sealed again. Its difficult to say how far to go without seeing the rusty parts your mention.

we're near downham market, up the a10 from cambridge? Prob 45 mins from cambridge ish i'd imagine? We also may be moving workshops very soon, to a much nicer one, all going well, we may be in by the start of december. When are your weeks off??

Just the one week (that work hasn't signed of yet :mad2: ) but 22nd - 26th I reckon.

 

Also putting together a wishlist of other things i might want done too :)

You can guess that my week off wasn't approved so no hols until Jan now.

 

You guys open weekends? Thinking i pop down on a Saturday in Jan when the snow melts!

Definitely wouldn't be £100 a panel anywhere nearby then, more like £150 - £200 depending how bad things are. just so you know what to expect.

That's why I'm travelling out into the sticks! This damn snow won't help things either!
