Mrk2 Golf VR6 Conversions

Anyone know where I can get hold of info on VR6 conversions on Mrk2 Golf's? Places that do it, things to look out for when buying one already done, that kinda thing

Try clubgti.com and vwvortex.com as many guys have done this on these forums. As mentioned PhatVR6 knows all the ins and outs of this conversion. Try designadubs as well. They seem to be pretty handy with the oily bits. The owner(?) of that place goes by 800gallons.

There is also a decent one on ebay right now.

What do you need to know? there are lots of options and different ways to do it. Many WRONG ways, but a few variations on the right way.

 

As a rule of thumb, if it's looks factory and drives well, it's a good one. If it looks like something off scrap heap challenge and handles like a drunken schoolgirl learning to ice skate it's a dog....

 

Designa Dubs are in Berkshire I think, there's nothing that Matt doesn't know about the mk2 VR6, he can do one in a day no bother.

theres a few on the autotrader at the mo that really wet my appetite as i love the mk2 and the vr6 snarl but im a bit warry does anyone know of these motors and can say yeah they were done proffesionally???

a corrado vr all day

 

my mate has a golf vr and i run rings round him on bend roads only good for straight roads

 

corrado vr great which ever way u drive it

I know that the 1st and 2nd ratios on all 2wd VR6 boxes are the same... I'm pretty sure that the rest of the gear ratios are also the same, but the final drive ratios may be different on the 2.9 boxes... 8)

 

(just bought a 2.8VR box to put the 1st and 2nd gears into my G60 box, so I've learnt a lot about VR 1st and 2nd gears! ;) :roll: :lol: )

Correct.

 

You need to look at how the enigne is mounted. The SHOULD have used the mk2 sunframe and mounts. the front cross memebr can eith er be the m2 one, or a corrado VR6 one, either way, it's needs a modified bracket and a good quality mount (i.e.) vibratechnics.

 

Fans, another bodge area. seen loads with mk3 fans thrown in, or even uspdoe down SEAT fans!! the correct way is a Corrado G60 or VR6 radiator. fits stright in, no bodging.

 

suspension, should have VR6 rated front suspension at the very least, ideal, poly busbes, uprated ARBs, top mounts, strut braces etc. They CAN be made to handle, just don'e expect a standard mk2 GTI with a VRt hrown in it to work, it won't, and that's where they "mk2 VR6's don't handle" myth came from. a myth which I personally have proeved to be untrue through my track successes last year and I will personally poke the eyes out of anyone who I hear saying it because it f*cks me off BIG time.

 

brakes, 280's minimum. if it's on 4stud, check they are proper vr6/g60 claipers, and not 16v ones with cut down pads or sliders to make them fit.

 

also, there's variations in which wishbones, driveshafts and rack to use, but it's too much to go into here. basically, if it's 5 stud I'd guess all the vr6 plus axle stuff has been used. and if it's 4 stud, I'd guess it's mk2 GTI stuff on narrow track.

sorry phat ive got to disagree with u on this one

 

even the guys that have mkIII vr golfs around here will admit the car is to front heavy and when we gone for drive about none of them can take bends like mine, even one of them has the same setup us me eibach's and koni coilovers

 

the only vr none golf or corrado that gave me a surprise was a vento on coilovers and then had a long conversation with the owner and he said u do notice better handling due to the boot overhang

 

just my 2p's worth

MK2 VRs do handle really, I was only messin, if done properly though as Phat said.

 

Stealth's VR6x6 (2.9 6 speeder) back in the day was amazing....no hint of nose heaviness at all. Then the car evolved into the VR6x6x4 (Rallye floor) and was even better!

What reputable companies are out there that do this conversion to this std?

Also are there any companies that are not so good & maybe should be avoided???

& what is the going rate that this conversion should cost? (approx)

explain how I managed to get a 3rd place at the ClubGTI scottish national day and 4th quickest lap at curborough in a stripped out mk2 golf vr6 with no weight at all in the rear then?

 

oh, and if that's the case, then my 2.0 8v corrado must handle better than all your cars becasue it's got the lightest engine.........

LOL! hmm, let me think, my second only ever attempt at a track day.....and I hadn't even had the tracking setup on the car.

 

and at curborough, i was banned and hadn't even driven a car for 6 weeks.....

 

 

It probably does....

or maybe it handles well because it hasn't got enough power to spin the wheels in anything other than 1st gear.....

well if you manage to get that im impressed and means you have excellent driver skills on track.

 

The handling im talking about has nothing to do with how heavy ur engine is, im talking about 50/50 perfect weigth distribution hence my comment "to front heavy"

 

The weight factor comes more into power to weight ratio which usually has nothign todo with handling and more straight line speed.

 

I saw a few year ago a standard corrado vr lap the same times as a modified golf mkII vr, same engine but because the corrado had the better balance it was able to keep the speed through the corners better than the golf where the golf had better pick up but had to slow down for corners.

 

Also wasnt ur golf race spec-ed. I.e roll caged, wider front tryes and welded?? i might be wrong im just asking as you seem to do so many races and i think i saw a pic of ur golf somewhere???

doesnt it depend which vr engine is used in the mk2 for intance the golf mk3 version is a 2.8 with 172bhp???? and the raddo has a 2.9 with 190bhp???? so which engine used against the raddo vr6 in race with a mk2 would make difference obviously?

Seems silly to bother with the 2.8 if your going to that much trouble you may as well have the 2.9 :roll:

just to reqote what i said:-

the golf actually had a performance airfilter and exhuast system aswell so prob more power then the corraod but thats a guess

 

Also Dan i know this has gone off slightly :oops: but its interesting read in respect to positive and negatives of doing this conversion
