Thermostat

Recommended Posts

Hi.

Am i right in thinking the thermostat on vr is on the right side of the engine looking from the front? Also is the housing for the thermostat bolted on with conventional bolts, torx,or allen?

Cheers Mark

You are right in your thinking, the stat is located inside the black plastic housing fitted on the right of the engine at the front, and has three senders in the housing. The stat housing is fitted by way of three 5mm headed Allen bolts. If you are removing this part be advisedi that they are well known to become distorted through time and be prepared to replace it with new. If this is the case I recommend fitting all new parts for reliability including the transfer pipe from the water pump to stat housing.

Thanks for the advice.

The idea of taking the thermostat out was to thoroughly flush the engine block and radiator as i suspect the anti freeze had been in for some considerable time and was not G12 coloured.

I could not get the back socket head cap screw out of the thermostat housing so i didn't succeed in getting the thermostat out on this occasion. The 4c temprature last weekend decided me that it could wait. :(

However, it now has G12 antifreeze in it and an anti corrosion product as the car will not be in use over the winter. I will review the cooling system in new year.
